what are some good metronomes that are loud enough to play along to with headphones. i am searching around for a metronome that has like the different note timings like it clicks to 8ths 16ths and so on?
so recommend me some please.
look into the yamaha clickstation or the tama rhythm watch. both are good metronomes with lots of features, including the subdivisions you need. downside is they both cost $100 or more.

Metronomes are expensive. If you want a decent metronome, expect to fork out a bit of cash.

Some of the cheaper ones will subdivide....the Korg MA30 for one (I think thats the model number. Someone correct me if I'm wrong). The problem is being able to hear them. You can also try downloading a free metronome program for your computer if its near your drumset. I run my metronome through my stereo system with various adaptors & cables so that I can crank it up plenty loud, headphones or not.

you get what you pay for
All I can say is stay away from the Korg MA30, I returned it the same day I bought it
If you're serious about practice, Jeff's recomendations are excellent

A metronome which is quite affordable is the Matrix MR800. It's one I encourage my students to have simply because it's the loudest one I've heard in the cheaper price range. It doesn't have the subdivision facility you wanted, but it does have pulse settings so that you can practise in different time sigs. Also, it has an arch of lights at the top moving from left to right so that you can follow it visually. I can't remember if the earphone socket works in only one ear or both. But this is a loud enough metronome even when hitting pretty hard.

You guys have issues... I picked up a Hudson metronome/tuner for about £20.
It's plenty loud, I plug in the headphones and it's great. Only gives output in one headphone, but I can hear it adaquately when playing any drumset style. You can either just wear the other earphone or put an earplug in, doesn't really matter.
It uses crotchets, quavers, semiquavers, and dotted 8th + 16th (straight shuffle).
It lets me accent every 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
It has a little flashing light.
Seriously if you need tons of features to keep you interested... Gah.
Get a basic metronome and a set of IN-EAR headphones. I'm not talking tesco value £7.50 here. Look into Creative, they offer a good set of in-ears for about £20 (so I'd imagine $35-$40).
Does me fine.

^^^Yeah, in ear headphones and iso's over the top and you won't have any problems with hearing the click.
The MA30 is good for practicing rudiments etc or jamming the kit where you only want one continuous click. You can't program it to change tempo after so many bars or whatever. I guess you get what you pay for though...

I never used anything besides metronome online and my small 5 buck black box meteronome.
You dont need anything fancy.

My DB-15 (I think that is the name) is great (Doctor Beat 15. It is under 40 USD I think).
It can count numerous time sigs, can count 1/4ths, Eights, 16ths, Trips, Sextuplets, up beat (The And (+) of each beat), and the up beat on 16ths (-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0), a couple clave patterns, and a couple other things I can't remember.
I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.
Just let me know if you have a question.

I can't even remember the last time I actually used the sound on my metronome. It's probably been years (and I use it every day), but I always use the flashing light.

Compies hitch up all the time. Your AV program decides to do something, BAM, there goes your timing. Or your screensaver starts up or, well, just about anything.
All the recording and/or online metronomes I've used haven't kept perfect time. I have an acoustic metronome that I always measure them against. Yeah, they work for a bit...
*shrugs*
You have to feel music, and that's why audio is better. Taking visual cues will help time but won't develop perfect time, quite frankly.
Or something like that, I dunno, I pulled most of that post out of my ***. But it is true that online/recorded metronomes never seem to be on-time for me. Mebe it's just my compy or Nero, I dunno.

Aren't handheld metronomes software based as well? I don't see why there would be a difference. If a computer can keep the clock's time then why can't it keep metronome time?

The computer has other things going on besides the click.

Yeah. But it still keeps the clock's time accurately. And the clock requires constant time keeping, as opposed to short 'bursts' like the computer metronome.
Besides programs that are draining the computer's resources can be turned off. I'm not convinced.

Start a computerized metronome and an acoustic metronome off in time with each other.
Then you'll know.

I still think its good for people to use online mets if they cant get a real met.

I dont know much about computers, but I'd say the clock can be kept in constant time because its not a program. A metronome you can go to task manager and close it, but can you do that for a clock? So the clock would get priority over everything else.

Alternatively he could just not use a metronome; surefire way of keeping the other muso's alert and on the ball ;)

No it does not. The computer's clock isn't THAT accurate.
I don't know about stand-alone metronomes, they may be pretty close to a real life metronome, but I know for sure that web-based metronomes are definitely not accurate. Factor in network latency and software lag and you get a shitty laggy metronome.
