Well at school Ive been told to choose a genre of music, find 3 songs in that genre and write about/compare them. Then compose a piece in that style/genre.
However I started with Punk but thought, its ok, but not that exciting drum wise. Then I moved to funk but I'm finding trouble getting songs that are funkier enough.
Im open to try other genres, so if you have ideas please let me know. Also suggestions of songs in those genres please!
I wanna do something that is interesting to play but not something that will bore an audience. So funk is good as long as I can find a great groove that isn't particularly basic. Cheers in advance.

Yeah. I dunno what style to choose...
And I can't just say rock because the teachers goes on about how many different types of Rock there are, which is true.
edit: Im thinking of jazz, but then also thinking of bands I like such as Led Zeppelin and faster sorta music. GRRRRR too much choice lol!

Punk can be interesting drum-wise, it's just easy to play something basic and get away with it. I can make some recommendations for you if you'd like.
Or, alternately, Blues, or Ska could be interesting too.

I might go for Heavy Rock around the 60s, 70s and 80s.
So Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Kiss and others to choose from.

tbh its a piece of piss
i got a b, and pullled it all together literally at the last minute.
just choose a style you can play, and be like "this song is faster and has more solos"

Tower of Power!
Parliament
They're two vastly different kinds of funk, but funk nonetheless
And I can't just say rock because the teachers goes on about how many different types of Rock there are, which is true.
Thats why it would be awesome to pick. Everyones familiar with rock, and you could talk about the subtle differences in drumming that support the different genres within rock and what techniques or ideas uniquely identify them.

Freakin' dance rock, mans.
It might not be the most challenging, but it's fun music to hear/play.

How much theory do you know? Are you just going to compose from a linear perspective (Just thinking in melodies for all the tonal instruments rather than chord progressions)? That's how Benny Greb said he did it on that youtube video someone posted, and I composed a march that way (After listening to a bunch of Sousa).

I say go with some flaming lips....not too dificult and incredibly interesting drum wise. My choice would be off there album the soft bulletin Im thinking "waitng for superman" would be a good choice but "the spider bite song" is also a really cool drumpart. Whether you choose it or not I encourage you or anyone who reads this to check out the Lips. Steven Drozd is an increble drummer, and overall musician. Real bonhamesque...i d have to say hes the modern bonham when it comes to drum sound. Dont believe me? Check out his work on the "spark that bled" when they move to the 4/4 section youll swear its bonham....anyway way oversaid but in good tastes. So please check them out if you havnt already. I promise youll be impressed.
