so i've been playing about a month and me and some friends are going to start mucking around and try to get a few songs down. is there anything i should make sure i am able to do before we start?
i can play all your basic beats and thats all i need i think cause its just going to like punk stuff.
is hard to put the drums and guitar all together?
thanks.
uhhh, I wouldn't suggest playing in a band after 1 month of playing, but I guess it'll just be just for fun right?
You should work on your time keeping.

so just practice the beats that we have in song to a metronome?
If the guitarist has come up with something, listen to it a couple of times, try to play a beat that suites it, and then try different beats to see what sounds best.
Yeah that would probably work MickyJim, and also what casB said.

Hehe, I started drumming when we formed a band. I used to be a guitarist (played for 4 years), but when our drummer was sick, I played the drums, and that was the turning point for me.

what happened to the band?

well if you listen to alot of punk, you will find the drumming is pretty straightforward, so atleast you wont have your work cut out

if you wanna learn how to drum in a genre you gotta listen to the way the beats are made.

yeah i get the basic ideas of the genre. there are really only at like 3 main kinda beats. then i just change up the kick patterns and stuff.

what i did is me and my friends chose a few songs from bands that we liked and we all learnt them. i sugest you do covers just to get the feel of how you all play togeather and something to compare it too. then start writing your own stuff once you get eathothers feel. when playing the covers try to improvise some beats and fills and it will get you all going

yeah covers would be good but we can't find any song we wanna cover cause we are doing like hardcore punk stuff and its hard to find tabs.
Why do you need tabs for that? Just play a song over and over, and let your guitarist play along till he gets it right.

hmm thinking about covering comeback kid - talk is cheap.
Seriously...you're playing about one month and you want to cover comeback kid. You've got to practice a lot then...

lol yeah big call do you reckon that song is hard tho?
Dunno what song it is, maybe I have it on my mp3player...I'll check it later.

yes. i agree with this. a new drummer that cant keep time can ruin a band. dont take yourself too serious for a while. you're useless as a drummer if you cant keep steady time.

Only if you play this new shite, if you go back and listen to some older stuff theres loads of different beats.
And yeah, take a metronome along just incase you can't keep time.

Just have fun and try to be the best you can be.
You'll figure out along the way what it is you need to give extra attention to.
And that in no way should affect your normal practice routine (the diddles and all that other crap) :smash:
