g2 clear on yamaha recording customs.. makes for some of the best drum sounds ever.
Well include some expensive expert tuning + $$$'s load of audio gear.

The man is brilliant. That video is of a Dave Matthews Band - #41. There are some even sicker videos of him playing with Victor Wooten.

The DVD has some nice playing footage, and some interesting interviews, but there's not much else to it.
Carter's a great player though

Which DVD? His Under the Table and Dreaming DVD or his Making Music with Victor Wooten DVD? Why do you think it's rubbish? I find each of them fantastic, though I would have enjoyed more music on the Making Music DVD.

My favorite part is when he says that his favorite rudiment is the single stroke roll.
Anyways, Carter's a great player and his open handed stuff is nuts, but his playing does tend to get old after a while. He has a very well defined style, but hasn't really done a whole lot new since...well...he started. Also, he gets all of his licks from the guy in my avatar and Dennis Chambers!

I remember I was watching it, and I really didn't mind all the "ummm....well....ummmm....duuuuhhh......ummmmmmmmmm m" but it was when he was talking about why he started playing open handed.
I swear, that was one of the dumbest things i had ever heard.

His recording really makes his sound, I mean the majority of that first video was a simple beat, but it sounded beautiful the way he had it miced up. But yeah beauford is my hero ^_^

Nah.. I like him alot more than Dennis.
because you like him more than dennis doesnt make his any less dennis-ish
he just doesnt have as much chops or as cool of grooves :-/
manu is great but as a support player ONLY... after watching his solo vid on drummerworld I think he should stick to being out of the spotlight

He plays on a Titanium Dunnet. It sounds wonderful live.

01-11-2007, 03:45 PM
dont get me wrong
carter plays some cool stuff with dave matthew's band and fits their music well
i just feel he lacks his own identity, kind of like a lot of gospel rooted drummers that have good chops and groove but lack any personality

Dennis is like.. Funk only.
Carter is more brave.
Hunted By a Freak

i guess youve never heard dennis with scofield or john mclaughlin
carter brave? he just applies less creative funk patterns to pop music :-/

Janbacca
01-11-2007, 05:03 PM
They're an excellent band! And live they are killer; a lot of improvised solos and never just the original recorded song.
Jezen
01-11-2007, 05:06 PM
Ahh yeah i've seen that before, however I heard that many of the bandmembers didn't enjoy playing with Dennis.
I dunno, it just didn't seem too... tasteful... to me. It's all opinion of course, but I would have appreciated some space, and maybe some more variated ideas.
Hunted By a Freak
01-11-2007, 05:07 PM
yeah dmb is cool
but claiming carter is better than dennis because dennis only plays funk and fusion is not only inaccurate, but a logical fallacy
carter plays the same music of stuff whether he's with dmb or wooten
care to give me other examples?

i wouldnt be surprised if a lot of those guys didnt like dennis tbh
having played with buddy for so long they are used to his style of playing which is a bit old fashioned in comparison
as much as buddy was great, jazz guys like that can be a little weird to newer guys because phrasing and style has evolved so much from the antiquated solo and fill ideas of buddy or anyone like that
and a lot of other instrumentalists don't understand drums
i found myself having to 'dumb down' my playing (ie not play as many odd groupings or weird metric fun phrases) when playing with bob mintzer, because he's used to an old school guy like peter erskine

He's not necessarily better.. And I don't think I said that, unless I did then that's me being tired and silly. I'm typing on my laptop and i'm in bed now.

I agree with super Cameron. Carter is a good player but he sort of found his style or whatever and just plays it over and over. Doesn't mean he doesn't make good music with DMB. Also the making music DVD with Victor Wooten is pretty cool
damn the topic changed as I was typing...

I think there is a funny video floating around the internet of Carter cussing Dave out after a gig on Letterman or some other late night show (correct me if my facts are wrong, its been a while since I've seen the video). Apparently, Dave completely missed a transition and made Carter look like a fool when his fill was out of place. Dave responds to it in typical stoner fasion, however, "Oh, did I? I didn't notice. Sorry."

It's not that he can't adapt to different styles of music; he simply has his own sound. Is Jimi Hendrix criticized for having his own sound?

Haha. I somewhat doubt the validity of that. Carter and Dave have a great relationship live and both appear to be very understanding. During live performances they're always smiling and in between songs they chat and point to each other approvingly. And besides, how could it have been only Dave's fault for the poor transition? The band is freaking tight anyway.

Oh no, it's quite real. Whether or not they are friends isn't really the issue here. I cuss at my friends all the time, and they do likewise. It's just funny to see how dave reacts, is all.

I'm a perfectionist. I hate it. If one of my drums gets a tiny scratch on it i'd probably buy a new one just so it's perfect. I have to have all my sticks the same. I tried a bunch and like one kind better so I just wanted to throw the rest out because all my sticks wouldn't be the same.
It's weird, I know.

That's not really perfectionism, that's OCD as Cameron said. Perfectionism, in this context, applies to playing. Then again, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to be OCD!

Not from a technical perspective. Have you seen the MD Festival '03 video with Antonio? Improvising over two or three different claves in different time signatures at different TEMPOS, for god's sake...the man is downright absurd. I like some of Horatio's playing, but I really dislike alot of it, too...his solo albums blow. I'd take Ignacio Berroa over him, truth be told.
Hunted By a Freak
01-14-2007, 03:47 PM
yeah, i saw his stuff from the MD days a while back... I remember him only having one cowbell for his left foot and playing a lot of quarter note stuff on it though... and doing a lot of senseless blowing over that too..
i also have seen the speaking of now DVD with him and was not impressed.. i mean he's a good player, just not one of the greats. he lacks maturity and his own voice, as i said
and as for ignacio.. that guy does nothing for me.. pretty average tbh
horatio has a great understanding of latin drumset stuff and his grooves are very complex and layered.. watch his stuff for the drummers collective... also check out his playing on roy hargrove's habana
