I've always thought of them as a bit of a mystery, my idea of grunge was certainly Nirvana style minimalism for quite some time. By the time i started listening to Soundgarden, Alice in Chains & Pearl Jam i had to change my view, because there was quite a bit of complexity and variety in the songwriting.

I've had past experience with Vs. & Ten, two albums i really came to enjoy. I didn't listen to them for a long while, i am talking years (I was turned off a bit as i heard some of their later stuff, which can be slow as molasses.) but recently i put on Ten after a long day through the Ipod and realised what a great album it was. There's a most unique, fresh feel to many of the songs on it that i can only equate to the excitement i get listening to early hip-hop, a seriously unexpected angle. Some of the arrangements are beautiful, and most of all i love the fact that though they share some of the depressing themes of their peers but it is still a hopeful listen.

Anyway i've decided to convert back and give Pearl Jam another chance, as i have only listened properly to Vs. and Ten. i might be able to appreciate their later songs a bit more. Anybody else listen to them?

Dude, Pearl Jam rock. they aren't one of my all time favourite bands but IMO their albums show alot of talent and i think they are on of many (including nirvana) pioneers of the modern rock song.

Grunge remains to this day a very useless term. What makes one band grunge and another rock or heavy metal, other than the simple act of being from Seattle?

Oh wait, nothing!
