Will ProTools only function if you have an audio interface like the mbox or digirack? Can it not function on it's own?
I'm a real novice, as you can see.

you need something to hook up from your guitar to the computer, that is the mbox or w/e. i just got one called a tascam today, it comes with cubase le. so far its not working right though.
but i imagine if you dont have the box to hook your guitar up to your computer it wont work. and if you get some sort of adaptar for your chord to hook directly up to your computer, it will sound terrible.

yes i know that. but i usually just get away with plugging my guitar into the laptop via the recording input. i've got a sound card too, so it sounds pretty reasonable.
the question i'm asking, though, is whether ProTools will function AT ALL.
I was trying to install ProTools LE on my comp, but couldn't because it kept on saying it couldn't find the DigiDesign hardware.

if thats the case i doubt it, you would prob need the mbox to go with it.
im in the same boat as you with recording wise. i decided to get a tascam today becuase its like 200 bucks cheaper, and comes with more features then the mini i was going to get. my problem is my cubase le wont reconize any inputs :(

Make sure the drivers installed correctly, and restart your computer if you have not done so. Make sure your PC (i assume thats what you are using?) actually recognizes the Tascam.

No, it cannot function on it's own. Pro Tools was designed in this way to prevent piracy. You MUST use hardware that is bundled with that software package.
Pro Tools FREE exists for older operating systems (OS 9 or Win95/98). It is designed to be incompatible with any other or newer OS. However, PTF is very hard to find these days.

Make sure Cubase LE is set to use the correct set of audio drivers. This can be done using the dialog found at Devices -> "Device Setup". The subdialog is "VST Multitrack."

How about Cubase? Will that, too, only be able to function with it's bundled hardware?

No. Pro Tools is the only software I'm aware of that requires a specific company's hardware to run. MOTU makes Digital Performer, but I cannot say for certain if that requires MOTU hardware or not.
Cubase definitely does not have this limitation. Nor do the majority of DAW software packages available.
Why do you want to use Pro Tools so much?
What's wrong with Live/Cubase/Logic?

Because of the imaging it's managed to create in musicians minds.
Despite having explained this to people on numerous occaisions I still can't get them to forget the idea that pro tools let's you magically fix drum tracks or guitar tracks and that you don't have to actually be able to play any instrument to get a pro sound.
Some protools users are stuck up as well.
ProTools User: What software do you use?
Me: Sonar Producer 5
Protools User: *snorts*
:/

Cubase, Logic and Sonar will run with most things. I'm not sure about Cubase and Logic but I know that Sonar can accept multiple soundcards and interfaces in the same project.
If I want to play sloppy and make it sound good (always) I use Ableton Live man.

I find a big part of that is in the name. Say "Pro Tools" to any random person and tell them it's used in recording and they'll probably imagine a black box where talentless schmucks input music and get out hit singles.
It certainly doesn't help that the number of talentless schmucks in the public eye for being music artists is on the rise.

pro tools is mainly big because it's an industry standard... you can get the same level hardware (and bundled software) for less than half the cost of digidesign.
TS:
unless you're building some kind of professional studio i'd advise you NOT to go with digidesign and look at what's out there... trust me, you'll be pleased with what you find...
On that note our pianists' little bro got a digi 002 for chirstmas so we're tracking our demo on it... lol why not?
