Discuss the musical awesomeness that is Bathory.
Bathory inspired many Viking, and black metal bands. And I believe that Bathory is a must own essential band for every metalhead, even if you don't like black metal or viking metal bands. If you're ignorant of Bathory, go here:

Educate yourself.
So, their self-titled has been my favorite album by them since, forever.

Blood Fire Death is by far the best. It incorporates all the aspects of their sound into one album. The other albums are great too. Quorthon was a god.

Do so. Get Hammerheart too, even though I don't think you're gonna like it, haha. You just might though.

for me Bathory is only their dark early stuff. The viking era was just boring compositions with a mediocre singer and guitarist. The BM days were pure evil instead.

I didn't like the Viking stuff at first. I remember buying Hammerheart and thinking, "What the hell did I just get?". After I while I "got it", and I've been hooked on that era of Bathory as much as the black metal era.

Quorthon never released anything bad except for maybe Octagon which, was really not that great at all, but everything else he did was grade A stuff.

I'm not a huge fan of Blood on Ice or Octagon. But still I don't think that should be held against him, because they are only poor in comparison with everythign else Quorthon released. Hammerheart is my favourite followed closely by Under The Sign of the Black Mark and Blood Fire Death.

One of my favorite bands. Hammerheart and BFD are masterpieces among the BM and Viking circle.

Elizabeth Bathory is who inspired the name. She was a serial killer in the 1500's and early 1600's who killed 600 women, took baths in blood, and did all sorts of stuff like that. She was caught, imprisoned, and was forced to live in a small closet for the final four years of her life until she died in 1614.

The song Elizabeth Bathory by Dissection is actually a cover.
One day I will make a mix tape of love songs and I will randomly include the song "Bestial Lust". Hilarity will ensue, as well as a serious breakup. The lyrics to that song... brilliant.

That's the only thing I wish Quorthon would have done, actually had a touring band and played live. Just think of having a live Bathory album.
He was probably practicing playing everything at once so he could tour, hence the heart attack... Hehe, what a legend.

I wonder how Quorthon would go about the vocals playing both the Black Metal and the Viking stuff in one show.

What do you mean? You don't think he could do both styles in one show or something?
FatalEnergy
01-07-2007, 07:19 PM
Well, if you think about it, Quorthon never went back to harsh vocals really after Hammerheart, except for on Requiem, but they were still nowhere near the intensity that they were on the early BM releases. I would just wonder if he would treat the vocals different for the older songs.

Very raw. His vocals are more of a shout, not a black metal rasp like on the album. Sounds like there's about 5 people in the crowd
