Hey guys, I dunno why but I think that bands like Dream Theater and Rush are too prgressive if that makes sense, I dont like all the synthesizers and keyboards and that but I really like the songs that arent that progressive like As I Am by Dream Theater and Finding My Way by Rush, so are there any bands out there that are like DT and Rush but without the prgressiveness so the instruments are similar and that.

Thanks.

Progressive is such an annoying buzzword.

Thats a trademark sound, its what makes Dream Theater, Dream theater, and Rush, Rush.

Are there any "non-progressive" bands out there that use guitars, drums and bass?

Finding My Way was from Rush's debut album, which was more in the vein of Zeppelin-esque hard rock than progressive.

By the sound of it, you don't want anything progressive, you just want straight-up rock.

Yes. There are about half a million punk bands that can't progress beyond 3 chordes.

Say wha'?

You're looking for a band that's like Rush/DT without the progressiveness? Umm..You take away the progressiveness and you no longer have a band at all like Rush or DT.

I get what you're saying, about half the time that stuff works for me, half it doesn't. The thing that annoys me most about DT is their singer though, bleh.

Try Porcupine Tree. They're gifted musicians (drummer is better than Peart or Portnoy, to take an example) but more songwriting focused.

Colin is certainly a good bit more groovy than Myung.

I know what you mean, threadstarter, but "too progressive" is the wrong word for it.

lolz lolz lolz.

you say they can't progress beyond 3 "chordes".

Maybe you should progress past 5th grade spelling.

EDIT: and by the way, just having keyboards doesnt make something progressive anymore. All of the new bands that are actually making progress in the genre of rock are labelled as something else.

"Progressive" now means cheesy keyboard-masturbating instrument wankfests.

No one really understands, im looking for a band thats kinda metal or rock that kinda sound like Dream Theater and Rush because I like what being played when you take away the keyboards and synth. Its hard to explain, but I wll check out Porcupine Tree, Manu Katche guy lol.

So I refer to my earlier post...

Looking for a Rock/Metal band that use guitars/drums/bass, and no synthesizers/keyboards...

I see.

Yes but have the same kinda sound as Rush and Dream Theater just without the progressive sides.

You need to explain it better, becuase all I'm getting is that your definiton of prog is "has keyboards."

Talos

OK, when I talk about progressive I mean the odd time signatures, the weird structures and the skillful instrumental parts. I want all that but less Dream Theater like, i.e. little or no keyboards and synth. Kinda like Coheed & Cambria.

Rush has almost no keyboards on all their albums up to and including Moving Pictures.

And Porcupine Tree has keyboards on every song, but you still need to check them out because they're the best.

Scuba_Steve

check out mastodon or converge or both.

Unless you dont like harsh vocals.

Oh and Opeth has all the stuff you described, except they have keyboards on their two most recent albums.

I thought boring unispiring poorly written songs were Dream Theater's trademark sound.

Say what you want about their boring or uninspiring quality but their songs are pretty much perfectly written. Almost perfect composition.

Try The Mars Volta, Mastodon, Meshuggah's a little wierd but still good, Into Eternity, newer Opeth, Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, Protest the Hero, maybe Symphony X (the synths are less annoying and cheesey), Tool, Between the Buried and Me, later Death, Devin Townsend, The Dillinger Escape Plan.

All these are really good in my opinion, but maybe start with Mastodon, Opeth and Tool.

Oh and check out my band too:

Yep, totally poorly written. The member's have no idea what they're doing. Infact, they're not even musicians. Jeez they should just stop playing because nobody likes their music.

What the hell? As I Am isn't progressive at all, it's your typical rock/metal song. gee, if that's progressive for you, then I don't know what normal is.

That's what he said, he likes the sound of As I Am because it doesn't sound progressive.

Some bands that you might like:

Mastodon, King Diamond, Dillinger Escape Plan.

This is pure nonsense.
If you don't like the progressive sound, why would you even bother to listen to progressive bands.
If you only like non prog songs by prog bands, why bother in the first place?
And if you don't like synths and keyboards, why bother listening to a band that incorporates them?

I think you're creating aproblem that isn't there..
