Hmmm, Nevermore are in first so they don't need my vote. Pantera and Megadeth are both tied at four votes with a bunch of other bands but I've been listening to Pantera longer and they're one of the main bands that got me into metal and I like them more, so I think I'm gonna vote for them.

And that makes them worthy....why? I'm well aware of how long they've been around, but they didn't get to their current status until a few years ago. I'm not saying that they suck. They're a decent band and I have a couple of their albums. But as far as I can tell, they haven't brought anything new to metal. Some of the other bands up there were far more influential. Possessed virtually created death metal. They were one of the first bands to really play death metal, and they helped shape the entire genre. Just about every black metal band ever owes their soul to Bathory. And Carcass did the same thing with melodic death (and to a lesser extent grindcore). It's not about how long a band has been around. It's about what they've done in that time.

Yeah it's on Seven Churches, but it's actually older than that. Death Metal was the title track to their first demo way back in 1984.
