Addicts in danger of death face detention:

PEOPLE with a life-threatening addiction to alcohol or drugs will be forced into short-term involuntary care under a two-year pilot study proposed by the NSW Government.
Part of long-awaited changes to the state's Inebriates Act 1912, the proposal was recommended by a NSW upper house committee after the Alcohol Summit in 2003. But it has come under harsh criticism from drug experts and civil libertarians.

I don't think it would be effective enough to warrant this suspension of the individual’s rights.

Mentally ill young people at risk to themselves or others can be involuntarily incarcerated. Is this really that different?

Well, you can overlook the individual's rights question because any one with extreme addiction will be a danger to the people around them and these endangered people have the rights to be protected from harm.

The more pressing issue here is how do they categorize life threatening addicts and how they lay out safeguards and etc.

Some people are too stupid to know what's best for them.

I'd be interested to see whether it'll become like methodone-clinics; junkie hangouts when they give up on attempting to work or steal for their addictions.
