I was just listening to some tapes from last week and found this:
http://www.thorbass.com/sounds/sowhat.mp3
and I'm thinking, I played that and without fraking up?
so ITT (yes I hate that) discuss times when you played better than you thought you could...

Not that I know of.
I know I messed up really badly at Berklee Basslines when I had to take my solo. I hate soloing. The song was boring as hell, too.
Not really what this thread wanted but I can't think of a time I "nailed it."
what the ****...this is...deja vu? the ****...i just developed a very strange feeling after reading this thread...

I don't know if this qualifies as "nailing it" but if I stay up a lot later than I usually do I play so much better... don't know why, I think its cause I'm so tired I don't really focus on what I'm playing and just play.
Or maybe I'm so tired everything I play sounds good, even though its the same old crap... Who knows.

No, not really. Sometimes I've been really ahppy with the stuff I've done but I've always felt I could have done a lot better you know.

I usually have a good idea of how well I'll play.
When writing music with my band, I sometimes impress myself with my good taste and musical judgement but rarely with "how did I pull that off" type stuff.

At band practice the other week. My tone was great, the band was tight, and I improvised like a bitch
'Nailed it' so to speak

Only after I've rerecorded the track 3 or 4 times and EQ'd the living hell out of it to make the tone and timing perfect.

I want to just say that when you do "nail it" and lock it down with your drummer or your band, the feeling is quite addictive and very intoxicating. It's nothing I've ever felt before, and it's the draw that really wants you to make music.
That's why it's so important to play with people to develop those skills you won't with just a drum machine or a metronome. Knowing when your drummers gonna fill and nail his each pound of the drum with something sweet, or playing with the kick and locking in a groove with that. I miss playing with people as a result of that feeling. People have told me it's the same as throwing the perfect pitch in a baseball game, or hitting the golf ball with that perfect stroke.. It's a great feeling.

Som, your recording scared me.
It reminded me off Victor Wooten talking about Stanley Clarkes upright playing "It was like a propeller and I was like "oh man I cant do that"

Yeah, upon further inspection, that was a preeeeeetty lame way to put it, haha.

On Christmas Eve I was playing some songs on piano for my family, and one of the songs was a sonatina by Clementi, and it's like classical shred on piano... insanely fast, long 16th note runs in the right hand. I played it faster than ever before, and I completely nailed it.
I was so proud of myself. Not bass, but still music related so whatever. :)
