I'm planning on buying my first bass in the near future. I already play guitar. I plan to run the bass through a podxt live upgraded with the bass package. I'm not really looking to spend a whole lot. I've come to a few that seem good for the price.

Squier Standard Jazz Bass

Can anyone help me out with this decision? What would be the main differences between these?

I have the OLP, it is pretty solid. I have also heard good things about the new Squiers. Head to GC, it should have all 3.

It looks pretty badass too.

What kinds of upgrades could i do for cheap to make it better?

I disagree, I think he should go with one of the squiers.

It depends on how cheap. I mean you can upgrade the pickups, electronics, etc., but you don't really have to unless you want a really good bass tone. At a point it makes more sense to buy a better bass than buy this and put money into upgrades.

I'd go for the modified Squire.

I'm open to recommended basses that are close to that price range. Mostly because I have to spend an extra $100 on the bass pack for podxt.

I'd go the Modified Squier too, and maybe throw some new pickups in it. The Bass Player review on them was full of praise.

OLP's are awesome out of the box, at least the one I've got. It's got some issues, but nothing you can't fix. I was impressed with the tone quite a bit. It's tone circuit was a bit noisy, but then I played it through my rig and didn't hear a bit of hiss.

The modified squire, they are quite a good bass for the price you pay.

I'm really stuck between the two. What would be the differences in sound? I know that a bigass hubucker can't sound the same aas a single coil.

Also if i decide to get the squier should I get a Badass II bridge. I heard they were a staple in bass. How would this affect the bass?

i wouldn't bother modding a squier personally

The Jazz will be like all Jazzes, meaning hugely versatile.
The olp less so as it has only one pickup.

If you got the badass for the Jazz it would increase sustain, but you have to file the saddle to fit the strings yourself. It also makes look uber cooler.

I'd go the with Squire Jazz bass, their pretty solid and flexible.

Yes, they can.
