I feel kinda dumb asking this, but where is the "nut" on a bass and what does it do?

It's at the top of the fingerboard, the headstock end. It's the piece of bone or plastic that the string fit into and it sets the distance between the strings at the top end and also sets the distance between the strings and the fingerboard. So all in all, it's very importaint.
