I understand this creates a sound that is 'chock full of balls', so to speak. This right?
What happens when the pickups are wired this way, and does anyone have any contrasting sound clips, like a before/after type affair?

Ok, I'll see if I can come up with something in the next couple days. Basically it will give you a very funky/hollow sound. But you need to be able to adjust the balance between the two pickups, otherwise it can sound thin. As long as you have a balance control I think it's a great mod for any bass.

Would it affect a lead guitar similarly?
Cheers :)
Yep. I wouldn't described a pickup (or pair of pickups) as 'chock full of balls' at all, quite the opposite.
It sounds hollow, like SoM said.
