I have an old car subwoofer box that I'm planning to convert to a speaker cabinet for use with a bass head. I realize that this is probably really ghetto, but I do not care. I have heard of this being done sucessfully before, and I thought I might try it to see if it sounds cool, or different. I'm not using the subs, so wtf right?

Has anyone here tried this?

I understand ohms law and how to wire the speakers in series or parallel for the appropriate resistance. I'm wondering where I can get parts to rewire the speaker jack to fit an instrument cable in the back. Does Radio Shack still sell that kind of stuff?

Are you planning on using the subwoofer speakers already in the box? If you are then it's not going to work (not very well anyway).

But yeah radioshack should have the parts you need - just need a mono 1/4" jack.

yeah, I'm planning to use the subs already in the box. I'm not intending to rock out stadiums with them obviously though.

Someone I talked to once said it actually didn't sound half bad. Good enough for practice at least.

The thing is that you will have no highs in the sound since subs are generally only rated to 1kHz max (if that).

also, car speakers are very inefficient. so the wattage you put into them will give you a lower volume.

Even if I remove the crossover coils that would normally be infront of the speakers?

I also thought about wiring some cheap horn tweeter in there somehow.
I have a bunch of car audio crap sitting around collecting dust.

PS
Thanks for the replies. As I said, I realize it's not going to sound like a nice bass cabinet, but it's going to be an interesting project to me (as an electronics/audio geek) to see/read how the sound will differ, so I appreciate the feedback.

I have ran an 8 ohm mtx 15 with my 410 for periods of time. It sounded kinda nice, but I was really too embarrassed with the Eliminator logo on the fron of my stack to play it much.

Maybe you could paint over the logo, although that might change the sound. Or cover the whole speaker with a grill.

Only bass gear afficianodos would probably notice the logo anyway.

The speakers are specifically designed to play low frequencies, so removing the crossovers won't do much good. Best bet would be to leave the crossovers in and buy a second cab for mids/highs.
