I want to get a E-A-D-G-C set for my 5 string, a light gauge probably and nickel or nickel wound (though i have been thinking of trying a set of elixirs for a while).
Anyone know where i can get a set like this?
Also the Bass is a 35' scale, i've just kept the strings it came with on so far so i've not really tested a wide range on it, should i buy long scale strings for it? (I assume so, but are they necessary?).

It'll probably easier to get a 6 string set and then ditch the B string. Most companys dont make and EADGC 5 string set.
Light gauge and nickel wound isnt that uncommon at all. You could probably go down to your local and they'd have them.
Be warned though i used to use light nickel strings and they die very quickly.

Good call on the 6 string set, i should have thought of that.
I could get some D'Addario Nickel Plated Roundwound 32 45 65 85 105 135 or 32 45 65 80 100 130 sets at around £20 each and just hoard the B strings for whatever i might need them for in the future.
I was kind of looking for a place i could just mix and match strings of various gauges etc. but thats a solution too.

Mixing and matching strings is good, but it ends up really expensive.

isn't there a site like "juststrings.com" or something that sends out sets of strings to your specifications? like, a five string tenor set, or a four string BEAD set? that's not the right site i typed up, but there is a site like that. I think naveed posted about it once a long time ago.

I use this tuning and I discovered that instead of buying a 6 string set and ditching the B, it's better to just buy 4 string sets and individual C's. It's cheaper and you don't have to waste all of those B's.
You can buy individual strings on the internet, I recommend juststrings.com. They have decent prices and a good selection. You can make your own custom set, or just buy light gauge 4 string sets in a store and get your C's off the site.
If you play a 35" scale you should get long scale strings.

juststrings.com looked great untill i looked at the cost of international postage :eek:.
I'm going to ask at my local music shop if they can order any individual strings in, they're quite cool there. If not i'll have to find a different site or buy 6er sets.

I use http://www.puretone.com.au/
They're cheap, and will do custom sets for a good price.

D-Addario's website allows you to order individual strings. Not sure about shipping costs, but I got a 4 string tenor set (ADGC) for $22 shipped. Individual strings are like $4-6 a piece.

GHS makes a 5 string tenor set that is long scale and light. They shipped me 3 sets on accident and I have enjoyed them very much. Lasted longer than most I have played before.

This is just me being overly anal this morning:
' = Feet
" = Inches
A 35' scale bass would be INSANE. There'd be a couple feet between the first and second fret :lol:
