there didnt seem to be a forum where this would fit in so i stuck it in here...

as the title sugests, im interested in doing a bit of home recording (just as a hobby, nothing too serious).. originally i was planning on just running my bass + whatever other instruments i was using directly into my laptop and using some recording software, but my friend pointed out that id get **** quality (kinda like recording with a mic)

if that is the case i might buy an 8 track or something, any suggestions? (if i do go for the 8 track i want something relatively decent, but not (much) over 300 euro or so

My friend goes mic > mixer > Logic, and it sounds fine.

Laptop recording and all :)

don't just plug the instrument straight into the computer. use an audio interface, mixer, or at least some sort of effects processor; or else, yes, you will get bad quality.

personally, i run my bass into a Digitech BP200, then run a line from there into a PreSonus audio interface, which connects to my computer via FireWire port. sounds decent to me.

so my crappy zoom multi effects pedal should do the trick?

yeah. it's not going to sound great, but it'll sound a hell of a lot better then plugging directly into the computer. here i'll give you an example:

bass > BP200 > computer:

bass > BP200 > PreSonus interface > computer:

Well yes, he records with a mic, plugged into a mixer, which in turn is connected to the computer. He runs LogicPro on his Apple

I've recorded some dub for him. We just plugged my bass into the mixer and played away. Sounds decent.

Ohhh through a pedal, that makes perfect sense. Years ago (when i used a pedal) i used to record stuff for fun all the time, recently when i've tried to record again (after abandoning my pedal) i've wondered why it sounds like crap even though my soundcard cost 4x more than the one i had then and i have the new versions of the programs i was using.

thanks :D

if you have a 4 track just go mic/line in>8track (mix the levels>Imic>usb port of computer and you get pretty good sound for less than 100 bucks
