Well, here it is, the debut of my home recording studio! Pretty exciting. And nothing like opening up with some drumset solo work. Let me know your thoughts on the video/sound/playing if you would!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fnsA7xBqM4

It's too bad Youtube takes away so much quality, as well as the stereo mix. I had my kit panned to resemble a drivers seat, so when you do a roll down the toms, you can hear it going from left to right. What can you do eh?

the small tom, im guessing 8", seemed a little weird to me, almost tuned too high, maybe the mic placement though, play around a bit

oh goodie! i was looking forward to this!!!!

ok i've gotta ask. how do you sync up your cam and your mics? i can't figure out how.

mmm... that was nice! agreed with dave on the 8" sound... a bit too tight perhaps. Also, try getting your right side overhead to pick up your ride a little better- the bell's clear, but the bow/"riding" is kinda lacking a bit.

or not... did you happen to notice it's size. It looks to be 8"... It sounded just fine.

Unlike everybody else, though, I like the sound of that tom.

Great playing, btw.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Ahh, the controversy about the 8" tom continues!

Here's a run down of the equip specs:
Shure SM57 on snare
Shure PG 56 on toms
Shure PG 52 on kick
Shure PG 81 on Overheads.

Ran into a Presonus Firepod, recorded with Cubase. A touch of EQ on the kick, some compression on the snare, and a light touch of reverb over the entire mix. I think I need to work on mixing the kicks and toms together a bit better. They don't mesh as well as they could I think. I'll also make sure that ride gets picked up better.

The kit is a Pacific LX. That crash is a K Dark Crash 16". I rather love it. The A Custom can hide in shame.

Chippy: So you have two files, a sound file, and a video file. I throw them into Windows Media Player. Hopefully you have some way to find out a general idea of where they line up. I used the unique sound of the tambourine as a click off kinda. It has a distinct look on the video, and the sound is unmistakable. So I bring the sound and video fairly close together. Once they are pretty close...I zoom in as far as I can, and just slide the audio around very subtly until I find the best spot. The spot with the most pocket.
Hope that helped.

You play well good decent awesome pow.

Chippy569
12-28-2006, 02:11 AM
hmmm, i tried that, but it was like the sound file was like .002 microseconds faster than the video file, so when i had it lined up at 1 spot it was off at another.

what camera you using?

That was really good man i enjoyed it!

I actually like the 8" tom alot.

My only critisicm would be that its a little repetative in the middle.

nice vid, that K crash sounds fantastic. Hey try a little compression over the whole mix that always brings the bass/toms together a bit.

wow that was sweet. I really want to get my home studio running. Im sick of recording with 2 mics at the end of the room hoping to pick up some good sounds

Love the solo man, very nice playing. The K crash sounds amazing.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Yeah that K crash is pretty awesome. I want to get rid of that A Custom crash next to it and get another K.

Ahh sweet! Thanks Matter! I will indeed try that, and see if I can get em together a bit more. It really makes or breaks the "Foot-Foot-Hand-Hand" fills.

Chippy: Hmmm...dang! I have never run into that problem. I'm usually able to get mine pretty close. Here's an idea...so you're having a .002 sec difference between the two files. Go back to your audio mix (in cubase or protools or whatever), and very delicately trim off .002 off the beginning. Now try throwing it back into the video editor and see if you have better luck. Let me know how it goes.

Chippy569
12-28-2006, 05:22 PM
well it's not even that... if i have it lined up right at the beginning, the end is off. i if i have it lined up at the end, the beginning is off.

Honestly, I didn't like it. I know you're a great player from your other videos, but this one didn't work for me.

Senseless Apprentice
12-28-2006, 05:30 PM
Why not George?

Chippy: Hmmm...that is bizzare. Oh yeah, I am shooting with a Cannon Powershot 450SD. That's quite weird. Maybe your camera dropped a frame somewhere. How long is the movie? Maybe you could cut it in half? Make it into two files, and then throw the two files back into a movie editor and tie them together. Also make two different sound files for them.

I don't know, it just seems like the same stuff as your other videos. Or maybe the snare just kills me everytime I hear it.

Senseless: I've got to say that you have a solid feeling, I also have to say that I'm not sure what the hell is wrong with most of these people.

Hating the tom, hating the snare... I dunno?

I think they sound fine, your snare is crisp and powerful and that tom is in a beautiful range.

Snarz
12-29-2006, 07:48 AM
what A custom is that?

12-29-2006, 08:10 AM

....and the 8'' tom

I dont understand anyone not liking his snare & tom either?

diff strokes for diff folks :)

Chippy569
12-29-2006, 08:22 AM
the tom sounds like a timbale or w/e

which is cool, but then by becoming latin percussion it can't be used the same as a normal tom.

Linkinbassist
12-29-2006, 08:58 AM
That had groove, man, i loved it!

when you went into straight playing, i heard what sounded a lot like primus grooves...do they influence you much in your playing?

Good job, man, i loved it...!

Inkstar
12-29-2006, 09:20 AM
Really diggin' it! The whole thing had groove, and that's how I'd describe it: groove. Awesome stuff.

What's the reso on your snare? It sounds amazing! :O

Senseless Apprentice
12-29-2006, 07:09 PM
Thanks for the replies! I am particularly flattered to hear my groove getting compliments. I have found groove and time to be one of the most difficult aspects in drumming so far.

Linkin: Yeah, I used to take heavy doses of Primus, though I haven't listened to them in like a year or two. I need to get that back out.

Snars: That is an A Custom Projection Crash 16". One of my oldest cymbals, and one of my least desired. I wanna replace that sucker with another K. Oh man that would be hott.

Thanks Moog! Means a lot coming from one of our more advanced players, and a jazz musician. I'm in the jazz program at school, and I think jazz players are more of the tight tuning type. After all, that is kind of a standard tuning in jazz.

Oh, while on the topic of small toms, what do you guys think of Matter's 8"? Granted, it is a piccolo drum (I think), but it still gives a similar kind of vibe.

Senseless Apprentice
12-29-2006, 07:13 PM
Ah yes, and Inkstar...The reso is a "Remo Weatherking Ambassador Snare". I'm not sure if that tells you enough, but that's whats on the head. A year ago I just had the guys at the shop throw on something they recommended.

static
12-29-2006, 07:13 PM
Yeah, it's a piccolo tom. It's beautiful.

With his recording on your playing, I bet it would sound much better.

So it's a Snareside Amb.

Senseless Apprentice
12-29-2006, 07:30 PM
Hmmm...so is his just tuned a little lower? Because that drum is one of few that I've been modeling after.

static
12-29-2006, 07:31 PM
I believe that is it.

Keep in mind, your's is a PDP, his is a DW.

Plan B.
12-29-2006, 08:50 PM
I just think it needs a little more heart/meat.

I think your 8" sounds great man...remember my picallo tom is only single headed and made from steel. Again nice recording can't wait to hear/see some more vids so maybe I can steal some more fills from you.

12-30-2006, 11:05 AM
Woa man, thats some tight playing...

I loved the whole sound of the kit, minus the smaller tom, sorry.

Just a little criticism because i believe rather than just complimenting you i'd give an onlooking perspective.

The groove, although tight and flowing didn't seem to go where it wanted to. i felt when you needed to change and evolve the groove it just didn't happen very much.

Don't get it confused with over-playing or repetitiveness because its neither of them.

Like i said your playing is sound, but the flow is a bit off.
Please take this with a grain of salt.

Anyway, i thoroughly enjoyed it and await the next one!!
-Austin :thumb:

P.S You said you put reverb on the whole mix and you're running cubase. Try putting reverb on the just toms snare and kick, Might give it a little extra presence

12-30-2006, 04:16 PM
Nice playing. Enjoyed it dude. I think your 8" tom sounds just fine. In fact after watching your vid, I played around with the tuning of my 8"& 10" toms to see if they sounded better in a higher range. The jury is still out, but it made me think of trying at least.

Senseless Apprentice
12-31-2006, 03:24 PM
Thanks for the comments guys!

Austin: Taking the reverb off the overheads eh? Sounds like a good idea, will definately try it. I'll also work on the flow of things and evolving the groove. I think I might know what your saying.

Matter: Hehe, I in turn await more vids from you. Your Portnoy/Adler like Hand-Hand-Foot-Foot fills have been a big inspiration to me (like I said before). I am flattered your stealing from me though.

that high tom sounds excellent.
