I've been playing an Epiphone SG for about 2 years now and I have to say it isn't that bad. Considering I got it for about 300 quid it plays nicely etc etc.
HOWEVER, the thing that really gets on my nerves about it is the lack of sustain it has for my solos - the brights are too bright and the low frequencies just don't cut through. It doesn't seem to matter how much gain or reverb etc I put through the amp, I just cant hold the high notes and my harmonics sound like a fly farting down a piccolo.
Having looked on DiMarzio's sites, I'm thinking that the D Sonic pickup would be a good choice. With the polepieces toward the bridge I could use it as my lead pickup because I tend to play a lot of rock stuff but not much in dropped tuning. I'm also looking to replace my neck pickup with something that isn't so 'hot' like the PAF Pro (also from DiMarzio), but the overwhelming number of combinations that are possible is giving me headaches for several reasons. (This is where all you guys come into play...)
1. Will I be able to get a warm but fat clean sound with the above combination (I play a lot of funk and jazz as well)?
2. How much will my tone change from how it is at the moment (admittedly it isn't exactly the dog's bollocks as it is)?
3. And FINALLY, will I be able to get that long sustained solos I'm after like you hear on guitars like Les Pauls - I know the tone would be different but if I could acheive that level of sustain I would be a very happy man.
Any comments or suggestions for other pickups I could try would be much appreciated.
