View Full Version : Coldplay?

I know, I know. Not alternative, not indie, completely destroys all credibility I have to even start a thread with their name in the title, but...
I've always felt about Coldplay the same I have felt about bands like the Foo Fighters; I enjoy their singles, I like what I've heard casually at work or at friends' houses or whatever, but just can't be bothered to check out any proper albums or anything because I just don't care enough.
Here's what I'm asking. Could you-who-know compile a list of Coldplay songs I could/should download as a sort of catch-all unofficial "Best Of" that I could listen to without having to exert any effort in delving into their discography? Like I said, I like all of their singles, so if you could name all of their singles as well (I don't even know what most of them are called), that'd be awesome.
And help to this banal request is most appreciated, and I'll glady give something in return, like endless praise or rep++.

here is coldplay broken down for all to understand
Parachutes is a solid album, with some great material.
A Rush of Blood to the Head had The Scientist
X&Y sucks all around
that's about all there is to be said.

I am fond of the X&Y singles but that's about it
"White Shadows" is a great song as well

ugh X&Y is awful in every regard, i don't get why anyone would listen to that album more than once.

"Talk" has a monster riff, too bad they jacked it from Kraftwerk
also "Speed of Sound" is catchy

Parachutes is a brilliant album, though it completely steals Radiohead's acoustic sound, just with a different voice on top.
AROBTTH is solid album, eight or nine of the tracks are really top-notch, it's let down by Warning Sign and the title track though.
X&Y would be a top album too IF it wasn't Coldplay - it's far too similar to all their previous work, no huge progression when they really needed a big change of direction. Still has some of my favourite Coldplay songs, White Shadows, Square One and Speed Of Sound.

Parachutes was good but everything they've done after that has been pretty weak really. They've just become an annoying soft band

I don't know what album it's from, but "Kingdom Come" is a great song. I believe Chris Martin wrote it for Johnny Cash, who died before he could record it.

I always confuse that one song that Coldplay wrote with that Enya song that got really big.

It's a conglomeration of a Coldplay song and 'Man Comes Around' by Johnny Cash, listen to the two songs and you'll see massive similarities.
+ Yes, it was written as a tribute which explains it even further.

Yeah, it's definitely a tribute to American Recordings-era Cash, as opposed to classic Cash.

The best coldplay album is defenitely a rush of blood. From that my favorite songs are probably The Scientist, Green Eyes, Amstredam. From Parachutes Yellow, Shiver and Every Things Not Lost. X and Y doesn't have much. Kingdom Come is an excellent song however.

No, its gotta be Parachutes, its the most fresh of them all. The rest is just boring repetition

Okay, actually in relation to this thread: I like a lot of Coldplay 'songs'. I certainly couldn't sit through a whole album worth of material by them, but also, I don't like how they've become the poster boys for a whole wave of boring rock. They seem to get a lot of undeserved hate.
Listen to the first guy if you're set on getting an album by them. Get 'Parachutes'
If not, as I'd recommend, get these:
Amsterdam
Don't Panic
Everything's Not Lost
Trouble
Talk
The Scientist
Shiver
Yellow
Green Eyes
God Put A Smile Upon Your Face
Fix You
And that's pretty much squeezing out as much good as you're going to get.

They have some good b-sides too that aren't as ballad-y.
Check out:
"Bigger, Stronger"
"No More Keeping My Feet On the Ground"
"1.3"

'See You Soon' is the best Coldplay song by miles. 'For You' is also awesome, and most of Parachutes. The rest is hit and miss.

Shiver is easily the best I've heard. Which album is See You Soon from?

It's from the Blue Room, an EP they released before Parachutes. Yes, I used to be a rabid Coldplay fan :upset:

Blue Room is a good Ep, and Low is pretty good.

True, they were heavily criticized for the similarity between the two songs, I think the guitar riffs sound so much alike.
Dude, "Low" is so bad.
Don't Panic

I loved Low, that was one of their best upbeat songs though I think the ending could have been better instead of just E min and G strumming. I really don't like Parachutes (song) and A Message.

I liked those. I first listened to "The Scientist" while watching the video so that made it more enjoyable, I guess. Like everybody else, I think they have a couple of ok songs and then the rest is just dull.

Mostly, First and Second album are absolutely brilliant in their diversity and changes, but X & Y falls through on that. Best possible buy for coldplay is their Brothers and Sisters EP. Very similar to Parachutes but you can tell that they're still experimenting.

I'm really starting to absorb Green Eyes and Swallowed in the Sea into my list of favorite songs of all time :)
Chris Martin stated that on their next album (late 07?), it will have a very dark tone to it and will have no piano, so I'm slating that they will try what U2 did with their first few albums being pure rock and light but switching to a darker theme as U2 did with Achtung Baby.
The rest is hit and miss. :thumb:
Parachutes is their best, but there were a number of solid tracks off rush of blood to the head. I never even gave X&Y a chance after speed of sound.

This is pretty much how I feel about Coldplay although the first half of X&Y doesn't bother me anymore. I tend to listen to them for nostalgia purposes nowadays. I saw them live on the X&Y tour and they were great.
The 2003 live dvd is great as well.

Coldplay sounds really good live (one of the best live bands ever), as for X&Y, listen to Swallowed in the Sea and Kingdom Come, good acoustic driven songs.
