View Full Version : Selling drumset to start fresh, a good idea?

Well, I've got a Ludwig Accent Combo, wine red. I've got an extra stand, wuhan cymbals in great shape and remo coated ambassador on all the beaters, except the snare, which has a coated genera dry (evans). All drums have Evans Genera Resonant heads on the resonant side; the snare's got an Ambassador snare side head on the resonant side.

The drumset is in good shape overall, it just needs to be fine tuned and cleaned. I was wondering if selling the kit and start new would be a good idea. I'm just coming back to drumming and this time I want to get good stuff from the very beginning.

So, if I sell it I'd like to get a really good snare, something like a Black Panther or something like that, and just practice all the rudiments and go through some books with it. After getting that down I'd go for the full drumset, probably a shell pack or something like that, but really high quality, something like a Mapex Pro M or, gasp, a Tama Starclassic (I love that sound!).

Do you guys think this is a good idea? I really don't like my current drumset, and I guess it'd be better to sell it.

Thanks in advance! :chug:

If you feel its the right thing to do, then go for it :)

My advice would be to hold on to it. You can still learn all your rudiments on your snare now. And at the same time you'll have a drumset to practice on. So if a band comes up you could actually play with them and get practice gigging as well. Thats what I would do.

This is exactly what I did, Last summer, I sold my kit (network percussion crap set) and worked, and saved, I was planning to just buy a snare drum (like a hand hammered blackpanther) then a bass drum thent he toms, but I ended up buying the shell pack (without a snare) and then slowly building my kit, although i went a good 4 motnhs without a kit, I still don't regret it, it is a good idea and I would recomend you do it.

I have just upgraded my kit piece by piece. As most will know, I had all Paiste 101's I have just been purchasing Meinl Classics, when the new one arrives, put the old one on e-bay and it pays towards the next one! Obviously, its each to there own.

Sounds like a good plan, although there are many different alternatives to look at.

Thanks a lot for the answers guys.

@ Brokensticks: What different alternatives? Could you explain some? Thanks! :thumb:

I wouldnt do it personally, as much as I love snare work you will get bored and just want to have a nice kit to play on. You can always just pack away your kit and practice on your snare currently and sell it later on.

Then you can take your kit out whenever you please.

I'd save the kit, work my a$$ off and make money, then sell the kit and buy another one

EDIT: Better yet, keep the old one for when you start gigging and bring it around then

Yeah, I'd like that too, but guess what? Univeristy sucks most of the time, so I really can't afford a job right now, really. I spend most of the time studying. I plan on spending my (little) spare time practicing, and doing exercise. I think that I won't be gigging or playing with a band anytime soon. Besides, I can get some good money for the set plus cymbals and a few accessories. I'd use some of that money to get a nice snare, and then I'd save some more money for a shellpack. I really doubt I would use the 'old' kit after getting a new one.

is it cheaper to buy a shell pack then build up?

It's generally cheaper to buy things in volume.

Well, I'm not really sure, but I want a good drumset, so I guess you really can't spend few money on a good drumset if you want it to be good.

I prefer shell packs to kits.

I already have enough hardware, dont wanna be paying extra for stuff i dont need.

how long would u have to save up for the pro-m/starclassic. if its ages (years), id suggest keep the kit and sell it when ur buying the kit. if its only a few months a bit of snare work could be great for ur skills, and ur love of drumming shouldnt have drained out by then

Well, I guess that I would be without a drumset for some 6 months or a year. I don't think it is such a big deal because I'm not gigging or playing with a band right now, I'm just going to be practicing, maybe in a year or so I'd like to get into a band, but not now.

keep the kit, get a practice pad, work.

If you have say about $600 set aside. Look at ebay, and wait for a good deal to come around on a like new Pro M.
