Lars Ulrich:

1. Has Kids (Therefore cannot be gay)
2. Has more than 3 times your lifetime of earnings in his bank account
3. Has a kit that is probably 2000x's better than yours
4. Can probably play 4000x's better than you

Metallica was able to make metal accessible to a public at a changing time in music.

Part of that was the simplistic nature. Sure, there were a lot of metal bands out there. But it just was a lil too metal.. and the rock bands, just weren't really rock enough.

Metallica bridged this gap with a section of music listeners that were reallylooking to latch onto something. And thus, they became a sensation.

Lar's drumming was simple, and it fit the music perfect. In being simple, it was inspiring, because now you could go play along to a world famous metal band that was really in. How cool is that for the aspiring drummer?

Haha anyone who uses money as a qualifying factor of being "better" at playing drums has no idea what they are talking about.

Lars got rich from playing in Metalica... he'd never be able to earn a fraction of that kind of income on his drumming skills alone.

sLarkin20
12-16-2006, 03:07 PM
If he didn't have such an ego, and have said/done some stupid things in his life (Napster) , I doubt so many people would dislike him, as least as far as drummers go. A persons personality says a lot for them. I personally couldn't care less for the drummers that are exceptionally skillful, but present themselves as "better" then the average person. I think thats one of the reasons a lot of the greats like Peart, Weckl, Gadd, Colaitua , Donati, whoever else, have a much larger "drummer fan base." They and everyone else know they are Gods more or less, but they dont present themselves as such. Besides that I think Metallicas music is **** and I cant stand James' boing *** plain vocals in every song : ) Don't flame me for my opinions!

I disagree with that last line but...

Metallica did definitely reach the mainstream market in the 90's, but Metallica are one of the pioneers of 'thrash' metal, which was by no means classed as 'simple'. The early 80's was a time of some huge transitions in music, one of them being that metal stopped being about leather and spikes and strated gearing more towards the gritty side of things.

For all Lars's shortfalls, he was an amazing spokesperson. He made drummers an important figure in a band, and not just the guy driving it.

I base a lot of Metallicas success around what they stood for. They targetted an untapped resource in thei type of audience and ran with it. In a time when punk was a little too out-there, and metal had a little too much leather, the average angry-Joe now had a band that could rock hard without all the glitz and it really paid off.

Metallica wrote some great songs and have an amazing live show. To be doing it for so long is a great achievement, even if what theyre writing now isnt a smidgeon of what it once was.

4) Realistically, if this kid is a n00b then yes Lars will be better for the moment, but if this kid practices a little bit, then it won't take him long to surpass Lars' level of ability.

1. I agree, it is unlikely that a homosexual person will have kids. Although I do know a lesbian who has two kids.
2. Yea we must ALL agree on this one!
3. I did put Lars ''Probably'' has a better kit. Also, a better kit is all subject to personal opinion. Although most would say Lars's kit was better than mine. I personally would choose my set over his any day.
4. Once again, Lars can ''Probably'' Play better. And thats probably not down to lars being any smarter, or any more ''Natural'' at playing drums. Its probably because he has played practically every day for the past what 25 years or so.

I can personally understand why Lars targeted Napster. I think nearly every musician of that time was gritting there teeth at the Napster program. Lars was just clearly not particulary bothered about his reputation and wen't straight on ahead at bringing it down. And alot of people respect him for that. The only people who really didn't respect him for that were the people who were sat at home, on the dole. With no income to actually buy the CD's.
Although Lars achieved his goal and closed down Napster Free file sharing. He kinda failed his goal also, as programs such as WinMX, LimeWire, Bearshare, KazZa, Frostwire ect: All popped up just months after the closure of Napster.

Damo
12-17-2006, 05:23 AM

I'm with Damo.. Metallica did a ton for music. They really did more then could be explained in simplicity. They opend up a whole new world of popular music.

Also on the napster thing - Musicians/Artists don't make jack from CD sales. If you got 4.5 cents per album sold you'd have a good deal.
Cd's here, though the prices have been dropping, go for $15-22 out of a record store. That's absurd price to pay considering the band isn't even getting 1% of that.

I download music. If I like it and want to support the band. I'll buy a t-shirt and go to a show. They'll make more money off that t-shirt sale then they ever would the album I d/l and it advertises for them.

Secondly, by me being able to hear their music, then I might like it. I'd never hear it cause I won't shell out $20 for something I haven't heard. Going to see them at a show, they get as much as 50% of the ticket sales.
