Check out Shure PG81 Mics. Word on the street has it that they are excellent for overhead micing.

the word must be horridly confused...

...check out StudioProjects B1 or B3.

you think it would work ok to have the snare and hi-hat mic'd under one sm57?

not wonderfully, no. SM57 (or any dynamic mic) doesn't pick up the high-freq from cymbals as well as a condenser.

so what do you suggest? ok scratch all this? im using shure pg56 tom/snare mics for all my toms, except im using a pg52 bass mic for my lowest tom, its tuned pretty low, and of course a pg52 for my bass drum, but what should i use for snare, hi-hat, and other cymbals?

you need something with smooth accurate response

SM57's will make the cymbals harsh (not including hihats though)

so then will the sm57 work for the hi-hat and snare?

it'll sound pretty ok, but you could do better with that 1st mic you listed.

81 on the hats , 57 on snare.

but either will be okay on hats or snare.

personally I would put an 81 over hats and 57 on snare

you can, but it's not optimal, is what we're saying. it's not "the best"

If you HAD to go for one mic , SM 57 would be the better choice. The 81 has more high end boost than the SM57 , you'd get better separation/definition with a 57
