Possibly one of the best Jazz bassists ever. His brother who plays guitar is also a freakin genius at tapping.
My school almost booked them to play a gig in March, but it cost too much.
Check them out if you haven't already.

I don't know if I'd say he's that good a "jazz bassist". He's a great funk bassist with his own unique style, and is in my top 3 bassists of all time, but he doesn't consider himself to be a good jazz bassist for a start.
A few times i've heard him play more standard jazz, it's had some nasty stuff in it, and the "stuff that works" (for me, anyway) tends to be when he throws in more soulful licks. More often than not though, he doesn't play jazz.

He dosen't play very much "real" funk either. He does hold a groove very well though, particularly when playing in a more backing role like with the Flecktones, who are excellent. His solo stuff I don't really enjoy usually.

Point taken, jazz is a very broad term.
I should have said fusion or funk. Nevertheless, think of the position of a modern bass player in a fusion or funk group. They hold the groove, which he does incredibly.

uh stanley does not play guitar
I heard victor on BETJ and he did some really good jazz bass, though he doesn't fit into the traditional role of a jazz bassist.

He's a very good bassist at what he does, no doubt....but for myself, I think he's crap. Not someone I list as a top bassist, or someone I like in general, especially when he wants to get all "flashy" and everything. I don't like him with Bela Fleck either.

Yeah, I find it really hard to describe what he does to be honest. It's not soul either, and you can't really describe it as R&B or anything... it's so here and there, but a lot of it is great at any rate, so I don't get tied down with trying to place him too much.

he was actually extremely modest when I saw him with bela a few months ago

Who is Stanley? His brother (Regi, I think) does play guitar, and he does some pretty nifty stuff.
Not that I'm into all the flashy playing and stuff, but he was incredibly entertaining when I saw him live. I can't say I've had any true interest in him in the past year and a half, but still, he's got nice chops, and he seems like a cool guy.
He did a book signing at my work on Friday and everyone was kissing his ***.
It's funny because as I was opening the thread I thought to myself "Possibly one of the worst jazz bassists ever," and the the first sentence of the thread replaced "worst" with "best."

Yeah, that weird guidrumitar-O. I still don't get how that thing doesn't sound like absolute crap, but it really kind of does.

The drummer is Futureman (Roy Wooten).
I don't think he has a brother named Stanley at all?

That drum-tar thing alternates between sounding terrible and sounding unoffensive all the times I've seen him. The first time, he had like 2 drums way too loud, and one of them was a primary kick, so half the time you couldn't hear anything else. The second 2 times I saw him he wasn't overtly annoying, but he didn't really jump out, I was too busy grooving to the bass and banjo and sax collection of awesome(I guess thats a good thing)

That's annoying actually... as a drummer, i'm normally picky about drum sounds live, and when I see Flecktones live in Glasgow in January, i'm expecting a pretty good sound all round.

When I saw he combined the drumitar with a kit, often playing both at once
and you're right I dunno where I got stanley from :(

I saw this thing with Victor's brother playing guitar on some DVD that Victor made. My friend showed it to me, and the guy was practically tapping out something faster than the Freebird solo in the oddest chord progression I've ever heard.
And it sounded like angels singing on Christmas Day.

I saw wooten about 2 weeks ago in philly. It was an amazing show. I'd call him funk, not jazz. Whether you like him or not you have to admit he's technically amazing.

Victor Wooten isn't the best bassist of any genre, but he's definitely very, very good, and the Flecktones are very easy to listen to. I just listened to Greatest Hits Of The 20th Century again earlier today. :-D
