I was at the GC today with my roomate. He brought home his aincent Ibanez guitar he got as a kid and wanted to learn to play it, and we went to the GC to get him sime strings and whatnot.

Anyways, while there I picked up a BC Rich Mockingbird Bass. I'm not sure which model it was, but it was like $500 and neck through. I always thought that these basses looked completley rediculous and were only sold to 15 year old kids who were looking for something that was more crazy looking than good sounding. But I have to say that I was amazed at the sound of the bass, and the flexability in the tone. It was very growley and throatey... Not to mention that it sounded great slapped.

I don't even know why I played it

I actually didn't buy it, though upon re-reading my OP I can see how you got that.

I may buy it. I have three basses I want, that being the most expensive. If I do get it, it won't be for another month or so.

Sorry for the confusion!

if you like it, go for it!

if i cared for the sound enough, i might be persuaded to buy one someday, but the looks really just turn me off.

i have never heard ANYONE refer to the sound of any insturment as "blurf" or "blarf"

wtf kind of stuff have you been playing?

BC Richs actually are nice, if your looking at the higher end stuff, or even vintage stuff.
and not all their stuff is wild and crazy.

i heard the trivium bassist play between songs...

And some "floppy B strings" have the blarf sound.

honestly, I liked them then and I like them now. in the 80's they were so edgy that it was cool, and now they're so tongue in cheek that it's cool. No one expects you to pull one of these out in a bar and play some Elvis Costello, but make sure you get a video when you do.

Get it.

hahah... that would be amazing.

"And now ladies and gentlemen, one of my favorite songs: Elvis Costello's Pump it Up!"

Joe: : pulls out Mockingbird

Audience: a collective "wtf?"

Joe: begins to rock their faces.

You know Jimbo... I never thought about them being tounge in cheek, as you put it. I think that summs it up pretty well.

You know, of course, that if I pull the trigger on this bad boy, I won't be getting your bass.

Then it wasn't meant to be, Joe. My kids will still eat, and I will continue to enjoy my civil liberties. Get the BC!

I didint think that Paolo's (Trivium) sound was bad when i saw em fairly recently.
wasn't "blarf"-y at all.

Last time time i saw Trivium none of them played a BC. But they are still great basses. Some hate the look, either thinking it's too gimmicky or just plain ugly. Myself, I love the look, and even own a BC Rich warlock bass. B-string is tight to my liking, no floppyness whatsoever. Did have to adjust the neck when i bought it though.

Go for it!

I might consider a BC Rich if I found a 7-string version of one.
