The bridge on my bass for a string thru body, but the bass isn't made in that manner. One thing on my bass that I would like to change is the string tension (it is a 6 string in ADGCFA tuning); will making my bass a string thru assist in this department? What are the benefits of having a string thru body?

It seems like it would, but I'm not 100% sure.

Unless your bridge has an absolutely horrid break angle, or you use strings that taper really really bad before the saddles, it won't have any effect on string tension.
A drill press, a pencil, hands, and some string ferrules are all you need, really.
Some people argue that it improves resonance, but if it does it's barely perceptable to my ears.

There really is no way to change the tension without going to a different size string. The string through mod will help notes ring longer and make harmonics more pronounced. I haven't found any cons going with that mod, except you may need extra long scale strings if your bass is a 35"+ scale. I would go get the ferrules from Carvin, they help out with that problem and are really cheap.
