OK so I built a bass over summer, finished it with about 5 coats of PURE tung oil, yes 100% tung oil, the stuff that takes years to dry.

I was unhappy with the contours, or rather the lack of, so I decided to get a belt sander a fix that problem.

Now, the bass is only half finished in tung oil, as the belt sander sanded off the rest.

So I need to refinish it, ive still got loads of the original tung oil left, and I want to use it. However I dont like the fact that it doesnt dry hard, it takes ages to dry, it smells funny when its drying and the fact that its not very shiny.

So ive currently got 3 options as far as I can think of:

1. Buy some varnish, do a tung oil, white spirit(thinner) and varnish mix. Which is what a lot of furniture makers use.

2. Buy some danish oil or "finishing oil", its basically the same as option 1 but less DIY

3. just use pure tung oil again (maybe with some thinner to start off with) and then wax it with a clear wax to make it shinyer. Will this make it dry harder aswell?

anyone got any comments on these methods or alternatives?

cheers,

Joe
