Alright, I originally asked this question in another thread titled something similarly. It didn't get replied to, so i figured I would just make it my own thread and not hijack the other.
I've heard some songs that sound like shuffles. Only quarter note shuffles were the subject of the other thread. The songs I've heard sound like eight notes with a shuffle pattern. I would count the notes on the hats to this effect...
|1 a+ a2 a+ a3 a+ a4 a+ a:| with the snare backbeat.
So my question is this, does this have a particular name like an "Eight note shuffle"? If not, then to how should it be referred?
Thanks.

I think you've got triplets there, but I'm not completely sure, I wouldn't know how else to read it, but that's what it looks like. I guess it could also be in a 32nd Triplet, which I'm not even sure exists, but it might, and that's also another possibility. Shuffles are mainly based in syncopation. So no straight eighth notes, it's a triplet feel.

Looks like 16th triplets missing the second note to me.
Which is essentially swing/a shuffle.

"1 a+ a2 a+ a3"
Hard to say from that, are you trying to use 4 part counting ( 1 e + a ) or some form of triplet counting?

1ea+ea2ea+ea...
That's what I gathered. It's how I count triplets, so meh.

That's odd. Also, it's based on the 16th note counting system. Surely that's prone to causing confusion?

ya, that's why I encourage people to use the 'Tu tu's' counting for triplets.

I got taught 1-trip-let. However, I read the thread down a bit about triplets, and why you advocate "tu tu's". Makes a lot of sense.

I would say 3 part counting. not four part.

I think that sounds most appropriate, so is that really a shuffle?
Sounds like youre describing a half time shuffle. Snares will fall on 2 and 4.

It is indeed! You are "shuffling" the 16th notes. It's a 16th note shuffle, though those aren't super common, though played.

Okay, I think I understand. Then, where does the "half time" come from in the term half time shuffle? Sorry if I'm not understanding something obvious but my notation and theory knowledge is admittedly small.

I think damo might have made a boo boo..? he's busy.
Generally anything "half time" drops the snare on the 3. Effectively "halfing" the time. (from 2 & 4). In contrast "double time" from 2 & 4 wouldbe throwingthe backbeat on ALL quarter notes, 1 2 3 4, effectively Doubling the time.
