so i was looking into buying a new snare drum, and i was looking at that PDP wood snare drum with the wood hoops. i like the sound of it but i was wondering that if you had wood hoops. would they crack/dent/snap/etc. when u hit the rim or a rimshot?

yes they are less durable.

Less durable, yes, but likely to break or the like, no. If you like the sound... get it.

there not as durable as a metal or diecast one (duh!). I guess with wood hoops you dont get to many rimshot damaged sticks...thats a +

A friend of mine has a Yamaha wood hoop snare (Anton Fig model I think?). He's had it for years and the hoop is definitely worn, but has held up and is still solid. He rimshots alot too. So yes, they will wear, but are designed to take a certain amount of it. Just plan on replacing it every few years.

Wood hoops that have holes drilled in them for the lug screws are prone to breakage.

Best to go with this concept:

Talk to paradiddle pete about this one. He has wood hoops on his snare drum.

I know I couldn't go for wood hoops, I rimshot 75% of the time.

Anyways what's the sound difference?

Do most of the manufacturers of wood hoop snares sell replacement hoops as well?

Yes.

While those hoops may wear, it'd take years of regular hard playing to break or seriouslly damage them. They are easily replacable as well.

Wood hoop'd drums sound great, deffinetely a case where the pro's far outweigh the cons.

Thanks ETP2 ;)

Yea, they hops on my toms get accidentally hit a little bit, and they're fine, I actually just tried to rimshot my 12" REALLY hard at some point, and it didnt dent it, I suppose it depends on the wood, something notvery dense like balsa wood wouldn't hold up at al, but something really dense like wenge, would hold up amazingly i reckon, I hate the look of ply hoops, I think plys should be gotten rid of, in everything, shells, AND hoops :p

BTW, work started today on my teachers snare, 14"x6" Padauk ;)
