Of all the little kid drummers on the internet, he's the best I've seen
Looks older. There was a wonderkid a long time ago that was making the rounds but I don't know what ever happened to him. This kind of looks like him though.

Yeah hes awsome, though hes a little jerk. I saw him on a news clip and he made sure it was known that "I never listen to rock and roll, I hate it. Jazz only." Seriously how about some appreciation for various musical genres.

Man he can say what he likes when he is that good. At 7.
All these 'good little kid' vids, they're crap, but good for their age - but that kid REALLY is good. omfg.
If he was on mx, I would rep him. But he is too busy being awesome to use teh internets.

We don't, per se, it's just periodically someone posts a video of him, thinking it's new and exciting. In fairness, it's unkind to jump down someone's throat for mentioning him, because they're most likely unfamiliar with the annoyance he induces.

I would disagree with this statement for two reasons:
1. I thought this kid's solo was much more impressive and tasteful that Royster's.
2. This kid was only 7 at the time. I think Royster was like 12 or something when his vid solo was recorded.

DxRocker
12-02-2006, 11:41 AM
Guys... we are talking about a 7-year old... I don't think the little kid knows a lot about composition etc. It's a kid, he's just having fun.
And yes, his site suggests he is full of it. What else did you expect? This guy has been called a total musical talented phenomenon since he was 4 years old. He grew up thinking that he ruled all and owned everybody - because everybody told him that.
With such a life, nobody is capable of turning into a "humble" musician.
In short: let it go. It's not worth bashing this kid. In fact, it only makes yourself look like a jackass.

Good stuff.
It amuses me how people hate Tony Royster Jr., BASED on the fact that people fanboy him. Just like how people hate Barker and Jordison. I'm not a fan of Barker, because of the image he projects. But come on... putting someone down because loads of people overrate them?
Sounds too much like jealousy to me... why not just hate the people who do the overrating. After all, Joey and TRJ haven't exactly wandered around telling everyone they're great drummers.
Jeez.

I say: let just everybody do their thing.
Instead of bashing people, try to learn a thing or two from them (even when that thing is "how not to do it")
Having said that, there is only one word to describe the clip I posted: AMAZING.
Josiah
12-02-2006, 07:19 PM
Indeed. Amazing for the kid.
I find it interesting that kids can excell like that. And then look at where they are now - exactly.
Yet the biggest people, they weren't famous when little, they just grew into it.
We_Love_Lime
12-02-2006, 07:21 PM
Maybe it's their mindset.
Thinking their good as a kid, they slack off somewhere along the road.
But with the biggest people like you mentioned Jos, they had to work hard to even compete...
DxRocker
12-02-2006, 07:34 PM
My guess is that these kids just loose interest.
Only very few off them persist right through the end.
Whereas other people, who started at a later age, weren't "thrown in" like that by their parents. They choose themselves to go down the path of musicianship - big difference.
You know, I was kind of the same back in the days. I used to play intensive tennis - also thrown in by my dad. I also was one of those "promises". I was right up there in my generation along with Justin Henin, Xavier Malisse, Kim Clijsters, Olivier Rochus and his bro etc. Trained with them, competed with them, had fun with them. Along with 100+ others.
I was thrown on a tennis court at the age of 4. Yes, I owned big time at the age of 14 and was among the best in Belgium of my category.
If I would have continued, you all wouldn't know me as DxRocker, but rather as that belgian dude that just won Roland Garros... But!
Then I turned 16. Then I went out (for the first time) to a party. Then I met this girl. Then I found out about the miraculous magic of weed.
Then I said to myself "wow... there is something else out there, other then playing tennis"
And that's when I quit and didn't speak with my dad for over a year. That's also when I saw the drumsolo of Santana on the video of Woodstock '69, totally stoned. "Duuuuuuude!!! I just gotta learn how to do that!!!!!"
So here I am :)

Greatest line ever from a movie -
"If you had to go back, would you make the same choices?"
"What choices?"

Haha, yes.
Gotta love the irony behind the story as well...
Weed normally closes your eyes - but it opened mine :D
About choices... never regretted it for one second. Have you ever heared about Sampras's life? No? That's because he didn't have one until he was 36 and quit playing :) But that's another subject.

The Tonight Show vid is pretty impressive for a 7 year old. However, that would be for a normal 7 year old. Once you go to his site and read that his nutjob, professional musician father basically forced music down his throat from birth, wel lthen that negates ALL impressiveness. He has all these quotes from famous musicians on his site about how he is a "gift from God" or whatever. It's BS. Anyone who grows up with a musician parent who plays jazz 24 hours a day while you are in your crib and makes you drum to beats at 1 1/2 years old will probably end up being amazing. The true prodigy is one that occurs naturally without being force-fed music, and pushed into a lifestyle by an overzealous parent. I hate those kind of stories, and I usually feel really sorry for kids that go through that. I have seen some pretty ridiculous stage parents. Well, anyway that's my 2 cents.

Here's the vid where he claims to hate rock music and shows his close-mindedness.
It seems that whoever called this kid a prick for not liking Rock doesn't understand children at all. He listens to Jazz all his life and is told that it's the best. He's 7 and you expect him to be open to musical tastes. Come on, that's absolutely ludicrous. How many 7-year-olds to you guys know that have an opinion on music? That's something most people don't really get into until they're in their teens. I have a friend who used to only listen to classical music when he was in highschool (and was pretty stubborn about it). Now he listens to Rock and a bit of metal as well and has an ever-expanding palette.

Funny thing is... he grew up to be nothing. I looked on his site, there isn't a single album that's not his own solo project(s).
Nothing from playing with other people.
It's generally the case with such things...
"When Jacob was born, it was the desire of his father, Albert Armen, an accomplished musician, composer and performer, that his son becomes a musician. While in the crib, Albert played jazz music in the infant's room 24 hours a day. With his father's direction, at 8 months, the infant was tapping his hand to downbeats of jazz. At 18 months, his father sat him down at the drum set. With Albert on keyboards, together they began playing duets."
Quoted from his site. Thats the first paragraph of hes biography.
Free cookies to point out why hes a jazz elitest?
edit: R0fl, I saw that video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWAMAh2JMqw)
I dont know if its just me, but I dont buy the whole "We had to turn down sessions".
Ok, the kids great for his age, but hes a long way from being "session level". His technique is great but he doesnt have the maturity enough in his playing to be offered the sums of money they were quoting, unless it was a complete moron asking, with too much money.
