I get the idea but can someone explain or tab a simple groove with broken 16ths on the hi hat. I have heard the term and have seen a video on you tube but couldn't figure out the pattern. Thanks:thumb:

It 16th note subdivisions. Try playing straight 8ths and adding some 16ths in there on the hi hats or ride.

Straight 8ths:

|x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-|x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-|
|1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + |1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + |

16th note subdivisions on "3 ee and"

|x-x-x-x-xxx-x-x-|x-x-x-x-xxx-x-x-|
|1 + 2 + 3e+a4 + |1 + 2 + 3e+a4 + |

BTW this is probably wrong as I'm uber tired!

Simplest way to think of broken 1/16ths.
First, think of an unbroken 1/16th note groove with a full compliment of 1/16th hihat notes, ie, 1e+a 2e+a 3e+a 4e+a , and add snare backbeat on beats 2 and 4. Ok? That's a starting point with a very simple and popular groove playing all the 1/16th notes available in one bar of standard 4/4 time signature.

To make the 1/16ths broken, you simply can omit 1/16ths from the hihat pattern.

Take 1e+a. If you leave out 'e' you have 1_+a
If you take 1e+a and leave out the '+' you have 1e_a
If you take 1e+a and leave out the 'a' you have 1e+
And so on. You can take any one new broken pattern and repeat it every beat or you can randomly mix them up with any of the above or even with 1/8th notes on certain beats. Get the idea?
