My friend is looking for an electronic drum set for Christmas this year. His price range is around $300-500. Any suggestions? I know nothing of the subject. Thanks.

A good one starts at around $900-$1,000 for a Yamaha DTX express. Apparently Simmons is making a budget e-kit....check Musicians Friend. I think they're selling it for around $600, but it doesn't look very good.

You won't find anything worth anything for 3-500, unless you find a used yamaha that someone desperately needs to get rid of.

You should definately save longer for the yamaha dtx express. Very nice kit for the money.

I hate ebay. Every once in a while you might find a good deal, but 99% of the stuff on there is a rip-off.

In my honest opinion it is not worth getting anything that doesn't use mesh pads (i.e. for roland TD-8 upwards).

rubber pads are noisy (yup, hitting rubber isn't silent like mesh), bad for practise (they dont' respond anything like normal drums) and much less sensitive.

Well I tried the Roland TD-12K the other day. The mesh pads were impressive, but the stick response from the cymbal pads was utter crap. I'm not too sure what it was exactly, but the feeling was really off-putting, like hitting an egg carton.

If you want an e-kit for that price... E-bay (or alike) is the only option if you want to have something worthwhile...

e-cymbals are pretty horrible... that's why you go e-drums and real cymbals!

E-kits feel funny when you hit them, and often respond incorrectly if you don't hit them "just right."

..well, at least the ones with rubber heads.

I've never tried mesh, so I can't really give a say.
