Thanks to the ice & snow storm in the midwest, I have to eat my tickets and miss the Dave Weckl concert in St. Louis tonite. It would be a two hour drive right into the worst of it, and I can't risk it with students traveling with me. I've been looking forward to this for weeks. ****!

Or rent a truck, and pack all your students in the back of it, with 50 10 pound bags of salt. And drive in reverse backwards to St. Louis while they melt the snow using the sand.

I know how to drive in snowy weather...I grew up in upstate NY after all. But driving around town, and driving two hours to and from are two entirely different things. And its not me I'm worried about....its the idiots who don't know how to drive in the stuff. The people I spoke to in St. Louis said I'd be a fool to try it...that it was really bad down there with ice and all. So I took their word for it.
Schmudiments
11-30-2006, 10:21 PM
It's been......uhmm......icing......a lot more (its not quite snow, not quite sleet). but 99% of roads are under control now. i live in a rural subdivision in a rural entity of st. louis and even my roads are clear now. if you have four wheel drive then you're set.
If you have two wheel drive, its risky, but do what you want.

It was -30 before windchill in Calgary a couple days ago, but now its going to get up to like +2 on the weekend. Driving on ice isnt bad. Driving on ice when other people are IS. Because people suck **** at driving, especially when its slippery.
TTTSNB
11-30-2006, 10:57 PM
and where might you be located? and ever driven on ice?
Yeah...ice really sucks, especially with a non four wheel drive vehicle. I've had some pretty bad situations in the snow, never crashed...but got pretty damn close.
One time, the roads were totally clear, but I didn't realize there was some black ice on the road just in front of me. So, I go to mildly slow down for a stop sign, and my car just...slides, and won't stop. In a rush to not go into the road and crash into a car, I slightly turned the wheel to the left and ended up spinning in a circle. I only avoided crashing by countersteering really hard, heh.
And DON'T get me started on how other people drive in the snow...
So in short... ice sucks.
Schmudiments

to get you started, (lol)
I live on a hill that is about 45 degrees up compared with flat ground. people that live near me, instead of speeding up to get UP the hill, slow down at the bottom and then creep up. thus, every winter, there's accident upon accident.

this hole ford sucks, chevy sucks thing is retarded. people are always trying to justify how one vehicle is better than the other.
their only evidence to back their claim is a lame story, usually a rare case if it's even true, about how either the ford of chevy that their uncle's, neighbor's, sister's second best friend drove, broke down on them after a year.
any brand of vehicle will last you a reasonably long time as long as you're not a dumbass and take car of it. my dad has a 2004 f-150 with a smidge under 170,000 miles that he put on it. do the math, that's nearly 60K miles a year. he also has a 73 f-100 with over 100k miles that runs well.
the millage to age ratio of a vehicle is more important than it's age when determining wear and tear.
it's true that foreign vehicles tend to last longer as far as millage goes, for instance nissan had a truck that reached 1 million miles on all original major parts. but this doesn't mean that american vehicles suck.

no, its fine now, i was just referring to when its really bad and the road crews arent on the ball. people tend to be extremely dumb. and that truck isnt the biggest you can buy.
http://www.f650pickups.com/blaze.jpg
My F350 is a 97. not one of the newer ones which are extremely crappy. Its a diesel, which, even without a catalytic converter, is better for the ecosystem than a regular octane internal combustion engine. I have a computer modification thingy that attaches to my dashboard inside the cab that replaces the ECU's shift times, engine valve timing etc. with the device's tweaked settings. i can pull a 25 foot enclosed trailer full of gear and get 22 miles/gallon. and it seats 6 :chug:
EDIT: that picture is a ford F-650. normally used for tow trucks and car haulers, with a pickup bed modification. pretty friggin huge. and those fuel tanks look like theyd cost a fortune to fill

Heh, most American cars do, not all though. Ford is getting a little more on the ball lately with their new models, probably because they're losing so much money. There's nothing wrong with driving a giant truck if you have a legitimate reason to drive one, it's just really lame when people drive them in the suburbs with two people in them you know. So unpractical.

My truck has 268,674 miles on it. it is 8 years old.
not to throw the topic of this thread, but i have a few things to say, because my second hobby, aside from drums and baseball, is cars.
Fords are made of better materials, more long lasting materials, have better engines (not because of displacement, size, number of valves, or because its a V6 or a V8 or a W16 for that matter, but because they are durable, they preform well, and they are easy to maintain). They also have better interior materials, and more comfortable seating.
Chevy's trucks are made of sheet metal like the fords.....almost. about 25-30% of chevy's body is made of plastic or some sort of hard rubber, while Ford's is absolutely zero. Chevrolet makes very powerful, good looking engines, but they do not last very long. 3 friends of mine as well as 2 of their parents have chevrolet trucks that are less than 5 years old, and 4 out of the 5 of them have had to spend over $500 in the first two years on parts, ect. Me, with my ford, i spent nothing. the one and only problem i had is that my leather-wrapped steering wheel was not fitted to the wheel right and it came off quickly, but that was replaced under warranty.
One truck company most people overlook is dodge. Dodge makes a quality truck like ford, and they use a quality engine (cummins, the company that makes about 35% of engines for 18-wheelers [second only to mercedes-benz] ) BUT, the interior of these trucks are extremely cheap. you could get an interior with every bell, whistle, accessory, and option, and still not be happy. the rear seat is about as thick as a prison cell mattress, and about as long as a toilet seat cut in two.
All of these trucks have their pros, and all have their cons. decide for yourself.

Ford just signed a 1.5 billion dollar tool and die contract with China. Wich nixed out quite a few american workers in the process.

i'm not trying to start up an argument of any sort, but once again, that goes right along with what i was initially saying.
your claim is simply an example of someone's problems. for every claim against ford, there's one against chevy and vice-a-versa
no offense, but i have a hard time believing that any vehicle can't make it past 50k. any vehicle can, even a fiat lol.

My parents have the 3500 cummins diesel for hauling around a gargantuan trailer. The back seats are absolutely brutal, and the worst part is the headrest. Rock hard and angled badly. The seats are quite poor, but I would rate the rest of the interior and everything else to do with it very well.

You actually have a legit reason for having a damnably large vehicle.
But here, there's more pick ups/SUVS than there are cars, and most people DON'T have a reason.
I was at one of those drive-thru oil changing places, and they had to rearrange everybody, and I actually had to back all the way out and around the corner 'cause this lady couldn't manage that stupid thing =/
Oh, and when I'm making a right turn into my lane, and buddy boy over there makes a left turn into my lane as well because he can't seem to make a turn into his own lane in his big *** SUV, almost running me onto the curb, that ain't cool.
