Aside from that, obvious nessicities when traveling (I hope that's not what your asking, if so, you shouldn't be touring).

Depends on the terms of the tour payment. This is the #1 you need IN WRITING. Food budget, what expensises are or are not covered, entertainmen budget, payment for playing, terms fo travel, ittinerary, # of shows, etc etc

Gear is usually covered via 'gear budget'. If you don't have HARDCASES. They are required for touring, if not 'Flight Cases'.
Depending on the number dates played, and the size of the shows, you should be getting contact with various drum/cymbal companies.

If you are rolling out with your own gear. Then you need to talk with the management about insurrence and how your gear will be covered. Really this should be figured out regaurdless.

You should be rehersasing ahead of times as much as possible, as you have only 1 month til it starts. And there are no rehersals once you go out.

Depending on where, when howmany, what is and is not in the budgets, etc
I personally wouldn't go on tour for any less then $1,000/week in cash ONTOP of gear and food budgets at least, assuming 4-5 shows a week.

stevensonmat2
11-30-2006, 03:03 PM
What do you mean by gear budget jos? Also what would you need to contact a cymbal company for?

Sunshine
11-30-2006, 03:07 PM
Maybe it's 'cause I'm a girl, but I'd say baby wipes.

Unless you're absolutely POSITIVE you'll be able to shower...at least at a good rate.

I hate not showering, but then.

It's easier for guys, huh.

Touring with a band is surely a rehearsal in itself. Most bands would probably get a load better from going on tour what with playing together nearly every night...but yeah, I see what you're getting at

i have tested this, you can survive in a field for a week with:

GUM
BABY WIPES
SLEEPING BAG
CONDOMS

drum wise, everything you listed, but double the amount of drum keys, and tie one to every bit of hardware with the strongest string you can find
they always get lost.

gear budget is for replacing **** i imagine, and contact cymbal companies about endorsements!

Josiah

Gear budget is for all gear. Depend on the size of the budget.

yea, that's true.. it's the first week of shows that would suck. Touring, I think every show should be the best show.

Most pro level bands spend a few months rehersing before going out on tour. The wearing of the road can hinder playing, and the extra prep can really help overcome that stuff.

hey thanks for all the help guys, right now from what I understand its not going to be like 4-5 shows a week but more like 1-3. If can get everything settled im going to talk to the manager about gear insurance and budget issues. I've basically made up my mind that if I can go w/in the budget but not really get paid that much i'll still do it. cause at this time in my life, its more of a learning experiance to see if drumming is what I really want to do for my life or whatnot

Corkofski

Unless you are rich. Going out on tour for free is plain stupid.

Not only is it costing you money, but you aren't making money.

Not very many people can just go spend money and live abroad for months on end without an income.

Corkofski
11-30-2006, 03:46 PM

i would honestly see it as a holiday

No. Every single band that tours starts out small. Playing shows that pay just for the gas...not always even that. Sell merchadise and everything you can to make enough money for gas and food altough usually every show you pay you get food at the backstage area.

Don't do it for the money, do it for the experience and just the hell of it. Going on the road with your buddys playing the music you love to people how want to hear it.

You are confusing 2 very seperate things here.

"Bands"

And

"Musicians"

Yes, Bands start small and have a goal to become large, they are like a family unit and work towards that goal as a whole, with the expressed intention of remaining together to become popular for their music. ETc

For them, what you say is true. It's a building tool for them to gain popularity.

Ok.

We aren't talking about a band here.

This is an established band, and he's going to play for them.

Totally different case.

throw your entire kit down a stairwell, and replace everything that breaks.

replace it all, then buy 2 more

your kit is breakproof

I want to go on tour so bad :( Even just a week or 2-long thing would be so much fun. If my band plays enough between now and summer I think we may start planning something out. So I'm really hoping for that

Same. I'd love to experience both ends of the touring spectrum. Like going around in a small crappy of a van that keeps breaking down, staying in Travel Lodges, barley having enough money to get petrol, running out of pertol, getting lost finding venues etc

Then a few years down the line I'd love to experience the "rock star lifestyle" tour where each guitar string has its own luxurious coach and you have a team of like 10 drum techs. Both would be really fun!

Cell phone charger?

Really good cigs?

[Even if you don't smoke, it's always good to have nice cigs on you. You can trade them for other things, sell them, bribe with them...at least that's how it works around here. If I was 18, I'd buy some.]

lol all the booze, condoms, and cigs would be a good Idea but its a christian band and they/we have a image to uphold.
I'm still deciding whether to go or not cause I'f its a one time thing I can afford to lose some money but they want me to continue i can't just totally nosedive financially.

Sunshine
11-30-2006, 11:29 PM
Aww, no cigs then huh.

But they're so good for bartering on the road =(

But then, I'm still thinking Warped Tour-esque touring.

I guess you're with actual people and doing a real tour, huh.

The kind where you don't have to take your turn driving the van.

Josiah
11-30-2006, 11:44 PM
Ahh did you find out about their budget? Don't feel bad for getting paid, that should be a good thing. And don't feel bad for turning people down from lack of money. If they can't afford the drummer, they can't afford the tour.

Haha

I've got some "interesting" stories from "christian tours".

Ahh, reminds me a little of the Warped Tour.

NOFX had a non-stop baggage fest on Underoath.

Like 1/2 their set was complaining.

About Underoath.

Being Christian.

And being the (apparent) reason the LA 'Tour wasn't selling beer.

But they might've just made that up.

Yeah I suppose thats true, around here 'tripping' is kinda of a catch all phrase for being high on anything. :smoke:

Sunshine
12-03-2006, 01:21 PM
Ahh.

See.

You have to be a little more specific here.

They don't even SAY 'tripping.'

If you're high, you're...well...high.

But if you're on x/meth/speed/acid/whatnot, you're rolling.

...

The off-topic fairy strikes again!

stevensonmat2
12-03-2006, 01:26 PM
Ahh I see the confusion. In the more urban areas of NC rolling applies strictly to X, unless your doing a roll.(big difference  ) Then tripping kind of goes with acid, green, shrooms, mainly just the hallucinagens. As for meth, coke, crack and the like, Im not to familiar with the terms used for those, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Sunshine
12-03-2006, 01:33 PM
Y'know, I wish I wasn't familiar with any of the terminology.

But the fact that there are large numbers of meth labs about 15 minutes away from my house, and that 1/2 the people I know periodically ask if I know a dealer so they can get their heroin/coke/shrooms/acid/x/speed/whatnot fix?

You kind of learn it.

And yeah...I always associated trippin' with hallucinagens, but I guess the desert does it differently. Which is weird, because things can still be considered "trippy."

stevensonmat2
12-03-2006, 01:35 PM
