11-30-2006, 12:37 PM
Gyorgy Ligeti - Lux Aeterna, Ramifications
Krysystof Penderecki - Threnody For The Victims of Hiroshima, Fonogrammi
Ryoji Ikeda - Headphonics, +/-
Iannis Xenakis - Metastasis
Diamanda Galas - Plague Mass (album)
Karlheinz Stockhausen - Gesang Der Junglinge, Kontakte
Trevor Wishart - Voiceprints, Tongues Of Fire
The Residents - The Third Reich & Roll (album)

Be careful with Steve Reich, most of his work sucks to high heaven. I'd honestly say it's more worth checking out Reich Remixed first.

And I'd love to be able to confidently recommend some John Cage, but I'm not familiar with enough of his work. Check him out at some point, though.

Oh yeah, and Glenn Branca - "Ascension". That's the song, not the album. The rest of the album is okay, but this track is awesome.

Scorch Trio - Luggumt
Yowie - Cryptooology

Gastr Del Sol - Camofleur

This album is about as essential as experimental pop music gets.

Slint. Spiderland is everyone's favorite, I'd consider Tweez to be more experimental, but definitely not as good. Their s/t EP is the most experimental, and sounds like was Tweez wanted to be...it destroys.

...and Hella, I really dig their double album Church Gone Wild/Chirpin' Hard. Big Black is good too...really noisy.

and of course Lightning Bolt.

Run Chico Run is another cool experimental group. It's two guys who play a bunch of instruments at once. I heard they can put on an amazing live show.

Sounds more like a novelty act but I'll take your word for it.
