I thought that this place needed a thread about Mr. Bungle.

What do you guys think is their best album/demo?

JonM

The song "Goodbye Sober Day," which is the last track on California fulfills one of my deepest musical fantasies: a Kecak solo.

TheMisterBungle

Goodbye Sober Day has just about everything imaginable on it.

I've got their 3 main albums, and I think it'd be great to get their demos one day. I love Bungle, my favorite album being a close tie between "Disco Colante" and "California". "California's" probably my favorite as a whole, but "Disco Volante" just has some of the best songs on it.

DanD

S/T has its moments and can be good to listen to when in the right mood

Disco Volante is one of the worst albums i've ever heard

California is epic

from what i've heard of their earlier demo's is crap so i've never had any interest in hearing them in full

California is awesome, one of my favourite albums.
S/T is really good, has some great tracks.
And Disco Volante has its moments, though I still haven't really listened to it in-depth yet.

I love the bass in Mr Bungle.

Yes Trevor is an amazing bassist.
Disco Volante is my favorite record from them.

Which of their albums would be considered their best?? Because I'm thinking of ordering an album of theirs off of Amazon...

Of the two or three that I've heard in my time, the only one that stood out as being especially sweet to me was The Book of Horizons. However, I haven't heard all their stuff (obviously) and so maybe you should just use my recommendation in accordance with those of others.

CaptainWaits
12-06-2006, 09:20 PM
Well, The Book of Horizions was the one I was thinking of getting, just due to there being that review of it. I'll look further into some reviews, but thanks for that anyways ;)

Book of Horizons for sure

I need some of Trevor Dunn's stuff too.
He probably has more stuff than Patton.

although it's similar to Disco Volante, which i also think is crap

I need some of Trevor Dunn's stuff too.
He probably has more stuff than Patton. You should check out anything by Electric Masada, especially their contribution to Zorn's 50th Birthday Celebration (volume 4). It's got Dunn on bass, and enough other quality musicians that will make up for any disappointment you may feel regarding Dunn's role.

Is the whole persona of Mr. Bungle to write like crazy-mixed-jam-session-ish music, with 'funny' lyrics like 'squeeze my macaroni' ?No. All their albums have a different "persona," so to speak. You need to hear California. It's like crazy pop music that jumps around different styles while still sounding solid. My words can't do it justice, though.

I don't think it's really so much that I dislike Disco Volante, but more that I just have to be in a very specific mood to appreciate it, a mood that I'm not in very often, whereas I can appreciate the other two in just about any mood.

Yeh. "Carry Stress In the Jaw" and "Desert Search for Techno Allah" are my two favorite Mr. Bungle songs. And like I mentioned earlier, Disco Volante is still my favorite Bungle album.

I do agree with HDH as well however. I feel I do need to be in a certian mood to appreciate it, but none the less it's still my favorite, even if I can't listen to it as much as the other two.

niobium

If I had to be in a certain mood to appreciate any of them, it'd be Mr. Bungle. It might be because of Patton's nasally vocals, but I think it's how every song has a minute of silence at the end or something.

The Bends is the best track on the album. It goes through so many cool phases, I like the whole concept around the song and it plays out nicely also. Disco Volante is pretty weak as a whole, I don't care for the production.

And I agree. The songs (when there's music) are great, but when there's almost just silence/random noises, it gets annoying.

I went through a period where i listened to nothing but Faith No More, then i moved on to Mr Bungle for quite a while. I've been a massive fan of just about everything i've heard from Mike Patton since.

It's kind of funny, i've lost my appreciation for some of his stuff over time, including Bungle. I'm bored with genre mashing now, when once it was so exciting.

California is probably my favourite album, i like Disco Volante but i prefer less chaotic structure. Girls of Porn is my absolute favourite song of all time i always put it on at parties.

That's a really funny album that has changed a lot over time for me.

I've always hated Phlegmatics to a degree though i still listen to it, i think theres nothing really going on there it's kind of bland. Everyone I Went To High School With Is Dead i used to think was the worst song i'd ever heard, but after i read the lyrics it seemed to tie together somehow. It's got a very doomlike feel to it i dig, and i like it now. Platypus was a bit of a mystery for a while i listened to it through headphones a couple times and it started fitting together. I think Merry Go Bye Bye and The Bends are pretty weak as well they just seem like random noise.

The best songs on there to me are Chemical Marraige, Carry Stress in The Jaw, The Desert Search for Techno Allah and Violenza Domestica which is perhaps my favourite on there. Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz is fun too.

I haven't heard it in a long time. I love the fat production on the drums at the 1:51 mark. Chemical Marriage is nice and relaxing, reminds me of the Kaada/Patton album. Violenza Domestica is so Fantomas...

lol my myspace's tag is "stressjaw"

I'll give the first track another listen while paying attention to the lyrics. The only Bungle songs I've ever noticed the lyrics in is "The Air-Conditioned Nightmare", "Goodbye Sober Day", and "Retrovertigo".

My feelings toward it seem sort of meh at the moment, but I would be willing to bet that it's just because I haven't listened to it in a while. This post doesn't really mean anything except to predict that I'm going to be in here tomorrow obsessing over DV.

Possibly the greatest thing about this album is the sneak attack recording style, with everybody hiding the bonus track following "Carry Stress..." from Trevor Dunn. Then when he found out, he went and recorded his own vocals on top of it, and none of the other guys knew about it until the disc was released.

Squeeze Me Macaroni has a sample from the film Blue Velvet, which i love. And Girls of Porn samples Super Smash TV (i'll buy that for a dollar).

Mr Bungle is a crazy band, Mike Patton draws on a lot of cultural references. I think they complement the songs greatly.

No, it's because each album is different. Every album has it's own definitive style. Mr. Bungle has the whole demented carnival theme, Disco Volante is a complete avant-freak out expirimental thingy, and California is a sort of chamber-pop surf rock pop album doohickey.

Saying each song is different is giving the band far too much credit, or not enough, depending on how you look at it.

When I saw that Norah Jones was on it I was really skeptical, but the track she's on ('sucker' I think) is probably my favorite on there. It's the first album I've bought in a long time where I just want to listen to it over and over again.

My favorite is Disco Volante, followed by California. I cut my teeth on the S/T album, but by now I've pretty much played it out.

About a year or so ago I edited a lot of their songs to be more 'iPod Friendly' (IOW, cutting off the minute of silence from the beginning of 'Travolta' and seperating 'Spy' (the secret track off of DV ... it seems to be called that) into it's own track ... you get the point). I also DL'd a few live shows from bunglefever.com and remastered them. The show from minneapolis (feb '00 I think) is absolutely amazing ... awesome version of 'my *** is on fire' .... a video of that performance is on Youtube.

I'm getting into Faith No More right now.

Will probably look into this band next, so any recommendations? Only track that I've had a taste of is 'Pink Cigarettes' and I like it very much.

Well, all three albums are really different. Go with California, it's an easy place to start from.

Got my hands on California, cool stuff. Was expecting more metal tbh... but yeh, totally jizzed myself during that metal bit in 'Goodbye Sober Day'.

Been listening to 'Pink Cigarette' every second or third minute. Jizztastic. Haven't really concentrated on it, will be grinding it out in the next coming days.

Pink Cigarette is excellent. Here's a flash animation I made learning the program ages ago using a section of The Air-Conditioned Nightmare - http://haz567.deviantart.com/art/Mario-Mushy-38206811

Though a longtime fan I only just listened to the s/t in full the other day. It had several of my favourite songs on there already (Girls of Porn, Quote Unquote/Travolta, Squeeze Me Macaroni) so I was destined to like it. I love the absurdity of this band.

man that was a great clip, thanks for the link.

I'm impressed they retained a faithful sound from the album, considering the complexities of production there it must of been some work setting it up to sound that good on a live stage.

Yeah, it's pretty neat the setup that Patton had around him.

How come I've missed this thread?

My favourite is probably California, but the other two albums have some really good songs, as well. The demos, on the other hand, I could have managed without. The only one I don't have is OU818, it would be nice to have that and complete my Bungle collection, even though I don't think it wil be close to being as good as the albums.

I have their 3 main albums. Starting with my fave, it's disco, s/t, and california.

Basically, i like every song on disco, but i'm especially into Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz and Carry Stress in the Jaw.

...and does anyone have any more information about The Bends? It doesn't really sound like an actual complete song, sorta sounds like a compilation of clips from unfinished songs or something.

Cool. That reminds me, I read on wiki that Heifetz and McKinnon both reside in Australia now. Would be cool to come across them.
