View Full Version : Let's talk about The Streets
I've been listening to The Streets all morning and realised again how great they are.
I think the new album was pretty average/lame but the first 2 were solid. I also saw them live this year and they put on an excellent show, the crowd interaction was amazing and there was a great mix of material. Personally my favorite album is the debut, but I know there is a lot of love for A Grand Don't Come For Free around here.
So what do you guys think? Favorite album/songs? Good/bad lyrics? Do they have a good live show? Will they return to form any time soon, or was the new album even that bad?
Also, discuss how good this video is;

I've never really liked him. I like a few songs (Dry Your Eyes is pretty good), but the flow doesn't attract me at all. I think Bartender wrote something about the lyrics being good while the music isn't, which I pretty much agreed with.
I actually think the new record is dope. I like everything he's done.

I would actually agree with you there.
The music is allright, but the lyrics are where it's really at.

blinded by the light is brilliant
Lock down your aerial.
I'm a fan of Skinner's music, and it would be nice to see him live. I've liked him since Original Pirate Material and have somewhat followed him to today. Prefer the old stuff but don't find the new stuff hard to listen to. I actually enjoy most of the songs.

I haven't heard the new album, but A Grand Don't Come For Free is decent, and Original Pirate Material is just awesome. There are so many good songs, Turn the Page, Has it Come to This, Too Much Brandy, Don't Mug Yourself, The Irony of it All...all of those have absolutely brilliant lyrics and are just amazing songs, all from the debut.
Yeah, the lyrics in The Irony of it All might be my favorite of his.

I love Original Pirate Material and A Grand Don't Come For Free. I've pretty much been a fan of those two albums since one of my mates showed me Blinded By The Lights a few years ago. I should probably check out his latest effort at some point, but every time I read about it, it doesn't motivate me to do it at all.
I thought "When You Wasn't Famous" was cool.
OPM - 4/5
A Grand.... - 4.5/5
The new one - 2/5
Just about sums it up. But somehow he's got much better live over time.
Well he's a lot cleaner in terms of drugs than he was in the early days, that could have something to do with it.
Plus, he has a lot more power in getting the crowd to play along with his interaction. If he was just any new artist he couldn't get crowds to do half the stuff he does now.

Fo sho, loved that song.
I loved the first two albums, never got round to buying the last one, saw them at Reading this year, absolutely fantastic - probably my joint fav set of the weekend (with Belle & Sebastian)

The Streets is one of my favorites in the Hip-Hop genre, with AGDCF being my favorite record by him. The new one isn't very good though.

A Grand Don't Come for Free is amazing. It's one of those albums I can put on at any time and love it. Original Pirate Material is not far behind. The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living has a few great tracks, but overall isn't very good.
As far as songs go, you can't beat "Empty Cans." One of the best album closers ever? Methinks, yes.
I have hopes for improvement on the next album. I hope Mike learnt some valuable lessons this time round.

I don't have the newest one yet, but Original Pirate Material and A Grand Don't Come For Free are both pretty good.
When I first hear them though, I thought they were (literally) a joke.

When I first hear them though, I thought they were (literally) a joke.Yeah, my friend told me that he had a song all about returning a DVD so, needless to say, I needed to check him out.
The new video (Never Went to Church) is pretty good, and the song is one of the better ones on the new album.
