well it came out today. and you know me, any excuse to talk about incubus. mh..i've had it for a week or so now and im pretty used to the tracks. its a really good album but some songs you need to listen to a couple of times.
if you've heard it, what do you think?
Choice Tracks are:
A Kiss to Send Us Off
Dig
Pendulous Threads
Oil and Water
Rogues
I think it's ****ing goddamn terrible. The tense in which I refer to Incubus as my favorite band is now buried even deeper in the past.
I quite like it. It's a lot better than ACLOTM at any rate.

This album has some of the most poor drum work i've ever heard from Jose.

we all have a weakness/but some of ours are easier to identify/look me in the eye/and ask for forgiveness/we'll make a pact to never speak that word again/yes, you are my friend
thats how much it sucks

LOL this thread is brutal!
I hated it at first, but after a few listens I like it. Oil and Water is my favorite track. There are some baaaad songs on it though.
Doesn't compare to SCIENCE and Make Yourself.

I think Sound Boy was asking what peoples opinions were on Light Grenades but anyways...
I love it, personally not as good as Morning View/Make Yourself but has some great tracks. It'll grow on me!
Meh, after giving it a week or so, it kinda sucks. Don't really know what I was expecting to be honest.
Morning View and SCIENCE are pretty good, but I don't ever listen to them.

actually, this album has kinda grown on me a bit. The first time listening I was like "this blows". Now its just decent.
"Dig" , despite its lyrical gayiety, is a pretty good song I think.

I don't think it's had enough time to fully grow on me, but I'd say it's better than ACLOTM. At this point I think it's what people have come to expect from Incubus. Nothing groundbreaking, but still some good hard rock mixed with medicore sappy ballads.
I expect nothing but the worst music from Incubus.

CONTRASTING OPINION!!!
I have loved the music that Incubus writes, be it hard funk or 'new age hippie bullshit' as someone put it. This album is, for me, inspiring lyrically and musically. Dig speaks directly and i like that in a song...It's a great album, and before i heard it i went and got tickets to see the band when they hit the UK in April. I, personally, don't understand the recent hate for this band...They are melodic, soulfull and write from the heart. Just my opinion...

I don't understand the recent hate either... especially from people who liked the Make Yourself era. I'd say that Anna Molly is probably their most creative single they've brought out since Pardon Me. Not that Pardon Me was particularly good, but its their best post-science single IMO. Not to mention, the album as a whole is far more superior than Make Yourself (although i have abit of a bias against that album) AND A Crow Left Of the Murder.
The only thing disappointing about this album i reckon are the lyrics. I know you say they speak directly, and thats a good thing, but i think if you're gonna do that, you need to do it WELL or else you'll recieve sooo much **** for it. They didnt pull it off is what i'm saying.

"Dig" is probably my favorite song off the album and this is probably one of my favorite albums by them. I do really enjoy "Enjoy Incubus," however.

I don't think so. It's not their best (it's Heartstrings), but Coast had some good songs. It's definitely a hell of a lot better than anything Incubus has ever put out. So, um, you might want to stop talking. Thanks.

What you must realize that this is a band on their 6th major album. To listen and hear how theyve grown musically really amazes me. but thats just something i look at that most people overlook. its a really good album, they just have so much awesome music to compare it to that youve already become attached to that its hard to really hear it sometimes, i guess. i personally dont see anything wrong with the lyrics, and musically i think its great. it doesnt sound like any of their other stuff, yet it still sounds like incubus, ya know? great, great job.
the hot tracks though are definitely the first five. although, maybe i just haven't listened to the back half as much. I don't know why no one's said anything about "Love Hurts," i think its a great song. that, "Dig" and "Anna Molly" are my favorite tracks. "A Kiss to Send Us Off" is rad too. yeah.
Come on. They've shrunk musically.

Come on. They've shrunk musically.
cmon, funk is great. i love it. but to go from sporadic, jam-funk-a-delic type music, to what theyre doing now, and still keep an original style? cmon now, theyre ****in great. you cant make revolutionary music 6 times in a row in consecutive cds. what the ****. theyre growing man. times change. and theyve changed into this. and it doesnt suck, these guys are still the same musicians, and theyre great at what they do. you know that. you all do.
these guys are still the same musicians. No, their original DJ and bassist are gone and sorely missed. Ben Kenney plays the bass like a guitar, but Incubus already has a good guitar player. His backing "aaahs" are nice, though; I'll give him that. Brandon Boyd is also a different musician. He used to write from a radically subjective, arguably drug-induced but unquestionably unique perspective, and now he writes tired, vague, sappy ballads. The loss of energy in the songwriting has sapped Mike Einziger dynamically, as has having to play duets with the vastly inferior Boyd from time to time.
They are not the same musicians. They're getting too old for their sound, frankly. They never had a sound that would mature much beyond 20. They were pretty far beyond 20 for their last album, and now they're 30. They need to throw in the towel. I think they even know that. I'll leave you with a quote from Brandon Boyd:
On a bad day, I'll be like, 'Yeah, we're probably not relevant any more, whatever. We had a nice run, thank you, how the hell am I going to pay the mortgage now?' Most other days though, I think if anybody likes it then it's a success. In all honesty, the realist in me knows the likelihood of us having a sixth album that did really well on a large scale is astronomically low, and I'm okay with that.

As other people have already stated here, I think the lyrics overall are a bit weak on Light Grenades (although, I like the lyrics on "Dig" - good track). But I think the main problem with Grenades is that it is more front-loaded than The Killers' Hot Fuss - after the first 5 or 6 tracks, its all over pretty much; those first 5 or 6 are pretty sweet, but from there its really only just adequate enouh to even be on the album, in my opinion. Although, in saying that, it is a massive improvement from ACLOTM (or even Morning View - never liked that one either), but the truth is these guys peaked around the time of SCIENCE and Make Yourself.

From what I've heard of it... it's alright, but I just don't feel it's up to the standards of their earlier albums; there's something missing there, and I can't really define what that is.
Although, Anna Molly does kick ***.
Edit: for the record, my favourite Incubus albums are S.C.I.E.N.C.E and Morning View, with Fungus Amongus a very close second.

You really want to know about the Incubus Album.
I have been an incubus fan for since I have been listening to music. They are the single most versatile group in music today.
The first thing you have to take account for is the producer, Brenden O'Brian. The man is known for capturing the energy in a performence (Rage Against the Machine anyone?) His style of recording an album begins with what the band sounds like live. If you have heard incubus recently in concert, Light Grenades sounds just like youre there. The average music whore today is used to the labratory sterile sound. But if you really take a listen this music has no life, body or soul to it (God Bless James Brown R.I.P). For anybody who really understands tone, this album is real.
The second thing is that incubus is not a rock band. For the die-hard fans from the early ninteies you know what im talking about. Marijuana influenced albums such as Enjoy-EP and Fungus Amungus get down and dirty to that funky rythms. Now I'm sure there are those of you who are saying,"well what about science, their best album ever?" I am a fan of science but its more for your thrash metal crowd that is just inlove with the fast beats and the complexity of the rythms. It has feel but its just a representation of what that band is not capable of.
THis album is not their best album. I agree with you all on that but it is still great to light up and listen to. I think i speak for alot of people who listen to incubus, the band is damn good.

Only bad thing about this album is the lyrics... .
They're vomit-worthy at times
