Love 'em or hate 'em, you can't deny The Germs are an important punk rock band. This is for discussion.

I don't get how they're important, and they're also really bad.

Their entire stage act was the equivalent of Blink 182 running around naked.

I don't really like them. Darby Crash is a dumbass and overall I think they're pretty generic and boring.

Except Blink 182 running around naked is slightly arousing where the Germs running around naked is very repulsive.

[Excursions] the germs are ok

[Excursions] but they suck compared to like every other la punk band from the late 70s early 80s
[Flagjacket] I'M A LEXICON DEVIL WITH A BATTERED BRAIN

I used to like them, but that was way back when I was a punk rock elitist and only liked bands based on their punk rox.

The things he did was stupid, but I heard he was actually quite intelligent and loved to read.

The Germs weren't important, I think they're just more known for Darby and his death.

I think they were failry influential to everything happening in LA at the time. I think bands like X owe a lot to them.

Friends, atleast......

Exene Cervenka's band, X, shared a record label, Slash,
with the Germs:

I have a Germs Burn. At first I thought Darby was really
mean. He was very punk rock, and I was very small town. At
the same time, he had the super- vulnerability of someone
who's been wounded. The James Dean thing. Someone much too
beautiful or much too scary or much too talented.

Yeah why the hell do punX glorify people who overdosed?

I don't think it was that he overdosed, but maybe I'm wrong. PunX are crazy.

I like the Germs. I'm not really ashamed of it. I think Darby would've been a really rad dude to talk to, one on one. He supposedly had an i.q. of like, 180. Something rediculous. I think the stuff he wrote was pretty cool, lyrically. Live, yeah, if it was like how it is in Decline, they blew live. But on the record I think they're really really good.

X and Fear are both better, though. Although they don't really have the same aura.

Ona side note "The Government Stole My Germs CD" by the Orphans is an amazing song. The Orphans were Erik Petersen's (Msscheif Brew) band before doing his folk punk thing.

He overdosed on heroin in like 1980 or something.

And I feel that Germs lyrics kidna have the Kurt Cobain clause applied to them all the time. "These words mean almost nothing looking at it, that MUST mean they have a highly cerebral meaning!"

Wow, there are a lot of Germs haters here. I'm not in the business of glorifying Darby Crash, but come on. "Lexicon Devil" is one of the greatest punk songs of all time.

I always thought a lot of people who hate the Germs have the Sex Pistols syndrome. That is to say there's a whole group of people out there who hate a lot of what the Sex Pistols contributed to the world (spitting in the crowd, half-assed anarchy ideals, the Casualties, etc) so much that they overlook that Nevermind the Bollocks is a damn good album. I think a lot of this carries over to the Germs.

Nope, they are just horrible. There is nothing good about them on Decline of the Western Civ, they just suck. They also talk about taking photos of themselves with a dead "wetback".

No, I know that, I was trying to say that I don't know if that's why he's held in such high stature.

It isn't, it's because he did crazy things like cut himself onstage and try to cover people with peanut butter.

Hate Darby, love the Germs. Pat Smear is a great guitarist, but he didn't show it in the Germs really, but he was pretty solid with the Foo Fighters and when he played live with Nirvana.

How can you not consider that album classic of that whole scene? It has the feeling, the anger, and very importantly the ****ing attitude. The album is amazing and one of the high points of a great scene.

Excursions
12-07-2006, 01:59 PM
It was an average album. This is fact.

Better and more important LA albums:

Middle Class - Out of Vogue
Minutemen - Paranoid Time
Wasted Youth - Reagan In
X - Los Angeles
Circle Jerks - Group Sex
Black Flag - Nervous Breakdown, Jealous Again
Channel 3 - Fear of Life
Fear - The Record

And those are just the ones that were really important, their was lots of other better stuff like Artistic Decline and MIA etc.

whiteminority
12-07-2006, 02:06 PM
Middle Class may have been more important because of its significance as being "the first" hardcore single ever, but its not that good. I would say, though great, the same things for Fear and Wasted Youth.
