Anyone have a phonograph or know how to get one? I want one because I've got a ton of old vinyls and have access to a ton more and I thought it'd be cool to own one but I have no idea how to get one. The ones on sale at ebay are the old edison one's made out of metal and such and I just want a cheap one.

maybe try searching for "record player" or "turntable"

Yeah, I was going to say, "phonograph" seems like the incorrect term. I got my turntable for $2 at a garage sale.

I found all mine when I helped my aunt clean her garage, and the few that my dad saved over the years.

Is it just me or does it have a warmer sound?

vinyl generally has a much "fuller" sound than CDs or Mp3s, if thats what you meant.

You can change the EQ on a cd/mp3 to get a fuller sound. But yeah, i love the sound of my parents/uncle's old jazz, fusion, blues and classic rock records on our old pioneer turntable. Weather Report, Miles Davis, Led Zep, i love it all. Makes me feel old haha.

I love the static sound the needle against the vinyl makes :)

It's kind of crazy that you don't even know that there are still record stores. Yikes.

For me, the best thing about owning a turntable is scoring jazz albums that were never reprinted for $2-$5. The difference in sound is notable on some releases, not so much on others, and it's not always a positive difference. I, for one, much prefer listening to the new Talking Heads remasters on DVD-audio over the vinyl copies I have from my parents, for example.

Buying good records in good condition on vinyl for a dollar or two is a cool feeling.

GN - how are you going to recreate vinyl sounds from CDs or MP3s? Yes you can play with the EQ and loudness settings, but you'll never recreate the extreme frequencies that appear on vinyl but not on CD, or simply generate all the sound that is lost when compressed down to MP3.

That said, one of those crap turntables with ceramic cartridges will never sound any good....

£150 GBP should get a Debut Pro-ject turntable and more than adequate Audio Technica cartridge. Then go out and get loads of 1st pressing Blue Note vinyl and then you'll see why audiophiles prefer vinyl over digitally compressed formats.

I never said that i could recreate vinyl sounds on mp3 or cd - where did you pull that from? The poster above me said that vinyl had more low-end than mp3 and cd players, then i told him to get more low end from the cd and mp3 players by modifying the EQ.
