Go out and buy the music legally. One day it may be YOUR royalties being taken away from you by spotty nerds who refuse to put their hands in their pockets to pay for art.

Exactly, for the better.

I always get into arguments with people about downloading music, pointless i know, but when someone says "I really dig 50 Cent, i downloaded his album last night" i just cant not say anything, its basically contradicting themselves, if they really loved it they'd just spend the money on a legal copy of the album. I have nothing against someone downloading a track or two to see what the music's like, then deciding whether to buy the album or not, its just people getting entire albums which pisses me off.

That's my problem as well.

I'm going to have to back off on the downloading for a while probably.

Also, in regards to uploading torrents now I'm all worried that I have something that is transcoded or not good enough quality or something. :(

They're pretty strict, but I guess that's what keeps up the amazing quality of the site.

Try http://www.archive.org for their live music search engine.

Or http://bt.etree.org for some torrents.

A ton of live oriented bands (jazz bands, funk bands, jam bands) allow their live recordings to be posted.

And to the people complaining about torrents losing the bands money. We are talking about live music torrents that the band allows. Its a free form of promotion in which people can record live shows legally and put them online to trade or give out for free. :)

Well the safest way is to simply upload only something that you personally have ripped onto the compute from the CD and have performed no other conversions on the files.

Africa
12-18-2006, 06:31 AM
Oh so transcode means it's been encoded twice I get it, and encoding it yourself means you're sure it's been once.

dimeadozen.org is the current iteration of a series of bootleg trackers. It's all legal bootlegs in every genre imaginable, including much good jazz. All lossless, well described, good community, etc. It's semi-private, limited number of members at a time, but slots open up regularly so it's not too hard to get in.

And if you(anyone) get an extra invite to Onik, I could use one at killerllamaman A*#T g mail DOT com.

Africa

niobium
12-18-2006, 04:18 PM
I just hate the lossy elitists there. I uploaded a perfectly good Ulver - Perdition City, 192 mp3. Direct rip (I own it). This guy asks me to rip it FLAC style, so he gets a lossy copy. He sent me a link for a guide, but I'm not going to do it.

Africa

Idk I'm scared to upload anything, I guess I've got to read all about it before I f'd over.

Caleb3221
12-18-2006, 04:57 PM
Most private trackers require lossless encoding, and it's not really that difficult to do...just make sure that whatever your uploading is in a...lossless format? I personally have come to dislike mp3s when I can get something else, as the quality is noticably worse. There are a whole lot of people, particularly audophiles, who refuse to listen to anything in a lossy format because it can just sound like crap sometimes if encoded badly, whereas if somthing's lossless its all in the recording quality.

I don't know how many times I've had this discussion and people get reeeally angry.

First of all. I have been an underpaid artist all my life: professional classical dancer (retired after 24 years) and actor (part time when i want to work - I have secondary careers). So, I know what its like to have one's profession considered to be a "luxury" or "frivolous" or "not important enough because it doesn't create a needed service or product". To them I say "BS": the arts are vital to maintaining a cohesive culture; exponentially more so than religion which the same folks believe is critical to the same cohesion to which I refer.

A colleague once said to me "Football players should not be paid so much" I responded, "No you're wrong; they should be paid well. But, artists should be paid twice as much for the time effort and heart they put into their careers. Negative competition is more about doing harm than it is creating lasting good." This is as true in the arts as it is in sports or big business.

For this reason, I am quite certain that the current trend of file sharing is not a response by "rebel teenyboppers" as much as it is a trend that is created by the global response to recent and continual changes in media and the technologies that drive it.

Recordings of performance, film, television, music and the like are not the major money makers for artists anymore. Marketing recordings are too expensive to take the chance that their sales will cover costs for the vast majority of unknowns. Further, such sales for well paid and established artists make up little more than five percent of profits. ( I don't include Holl-o-wood and some big-box-entertainment industries in this.) And this number is declining.

Rather, the marketing trends are proving that recordings are advertising and marketing for the artists unto themselves. If someone repeated listens to an artist's music s/he will ultimately want to go hear that artist in concert which is where the real money is made, and an artist truly proves him/herself to an audience. It is in concert where an artist establishes themselves and creates repeat business by creating a loyal following (or not).

I'm not saying that paying for music, performance and art is a bad thing. But, with the amount of choices available now, it is prudent to either keep prices low or make one's recorded music available for free.

Case in point: the Grateful Dead encouraged the bootlegging of concerts. The more recordings available, the more they are listened to, the more people followed them on their endless touring schedule. The Dead are probably the earliest pre-internet era examples of file sharing. They made a fortune directly due to this trend. They made a giant community out of it ("Deadheads") as well.

I'm no deadhead. But, I know wise business choices when I see it. I use similar "can't beat 'em so join 'em" mentality when I produce the occasional tour of my own. It works like a charm.

Artists need to learn "know your audience. Know what they like. Know what they can afford. And know how they like to view you." I don't produce choreography or performances that are universally accessible. But, I know my work has a defined audience. Ergo, I present my work to these audiences in theaters that work for them and I offer a limited amount of free DVDs at each concert that includes marketing material to those willing to be a part of my company's community of stakeholders. An needless to say, YouTube is a blessing!

File sharing is a marketing trend. It is only illegal because those with their heads stuck in the ideologies of the past don't understand that they can use it to their own advantage and the benefit to the world and arts in general.

(FYI: I will not post who or what my company is as that would be construed as using this forum for personal benefit.)
