You can write solos but you don't know how to figure out what key a song is in?

How do you? I've been curious for a while.

figuring out a key is just figuring out what notes are in the song. if the notes are C D E F G A B, it's in the key of C. if it's E F# G# A B C# D#, it's E. so on and so forth. annoying but not really complicated.

thanks man, i've looked it up/asked a couple of times and that's the first time it's been explained to me in a way that it makes sense. i find most music theory pointless to learn and consequentially makes it harder when i do find something i want to know about, as well as making me look really stupid.

yeah, i never learn anything until it's explained in english. "5ths" "6ths" "7ths" "diminished" "augmented" etc don't really compute with me.

Look at the circle of fifths and compare it to the sheet notes. But note that CDEFGB can be C major, A minor and a number of other keys (D Dorian etc.). It depends on the root note, but in pop-rock it's usually just major or minor (which means you only need the circle of fifths). If the song only has the notes CDEFGB and the song ends on a C, it's most likely a C major scale.
Music theory is only pointless until you understand it, really.
