View Full Version : Old-School Metal Thread

Not sure how well this will co-exist with other threads, but we'll give it a try, as the suggestion got quite a few people interested. This thread is used to appreciate all the bands that paved way for the metal of today. Anything goes from Sabbath to Venom to Iron Maiden to Obituary to Annihilator, and etc.

New Rule: No retro discussion. The only modern day work that can be discussed in this thread is newer work by old bands, but even that is discouraged.

I'm not sure what old-school metal is, but I'm getting into Dio again. He rules. The band rules. He's short.

Yes Dio is excellent. Have you heard any of his work with Sabbath?

He is soo short. I was watching A Headbangers Journey yesterday and when the dude interview him at Wacken I was like LOL. Haven and Hell is amazing \m/

Painkiller is getting into the new school metal, I think, since it is '90s. It'd be useful if Josh put down some guidelines. :p

Apocalyptic Raids

RIP True Metal 1970-1994

but seriously though, you should probably make some guidelines era-wise. Josh. '70s and '80s would be best, I think but that's just me.

and 0 retro bullshit >:-D

Heaven and Hell is their best album, and their best song.
Black Sabbath on both counts, I think. Although Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is a contender album-wise.

This is from Metal Church's website on the subject:

1980- Kurdt Vanderhoof starts a band that he names "Metal Church" (named after the alias given to his apartment where he and his friends worshipped at the altar of heavy metal) in San Francisco. Lars Ulrich is considered as Metal Church's drummer, but he ends up moving to L.A. instead. Nothing much happens with the band, so Kurdt moves back to his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington.

Many, many years ago on a distant shore
Men did gather secretly beyond a hidden door
They travelled long and travelled far
Dark into the night
Yes, this is the place they've chosen
To build the Metal site.

Congregation rises, starts to chant a hymn
Of evil, lust and hatred, the roots of every sin
The priest he stands before them, tells them why they are this way
Why they worship metal gods each and every day
By the hand of Oberon, dark into the deep
Love the evil things we do, the secrets that we keep

Metal church, unholy, who'll be the sacrifice
Metal church, the only, don't you know the time is right
Metal church will find you, can't run very far
The metal church inside you,
It knows just who you are, knows just who you are.

No use in speaking out against anything we do
While the men of earth they sleep, haven't any clue
Now the story starts again, all the time is lost
Metal Church begins anew....
Saving souls that are lost.

Metal church, unholy, who'll be the sacrifice
Metal church, the only, don't you know the time is right
Metal church will find you, can't run very far
The metal church inside you,
It knows just who you are, knows just who you are.

I thought about making a NWOBHM thread but nah...

Saxon - Denim and Leather, what a great album...
Angel Witch, Diamond Head, Blitkrieg, and of course RAVEN...

Raven were supposed to get as big as Metallica. They co-headlined a tour in 1983 when Raven's "All for One" album was released and Metallica's "Kill em All" album was out. Yes, it was caled the "Kill em All for One" tour... good times...

Raven are pretty boring. There was also Grim Reaper.

For me, Diamond Head is the only one of them really worth listening to. I loathe Saxon, and Angel Witch and Raven are just okay.

Diamond Head are cool.

I saw them live last year and they were pretty good. It was with the new vocalist who's name escapes me.

I think one of the best NWOBHM bands is Witchfinder General. The Death Penalty album is brilliant.

Tank are actually pretty good. I have 2 of their CDs. The reason I found out about them was Sodom - they did a cover on their 1989 album "Agent Orange".

I've got 'This Means War' which is pretty good... Savage is another one, their 1983 album 'Loose N Lethal' is great...

I believe this would be the appropriate thread to ask this. I've heard rumors of Motorhead opening for Heaven and Hell on some of their upcoming tour dates... anyone know of this for sure?

Motorhead is the support band on the Canadian dates, with Down opening. Now if only Motorhead will open the US dates.

I don't mind Tank. I thought Filth Hounds of Hades was a pretty good album.

****, that's the best news I've heard in a while. They should also open for the US shows.. especially if they're doing them right after the Canadian leg.

I had checked some Manowar when I was a metal newbie but to be honest I can't say I'm familiar with the band. Does anyone want to help me by suggesting songs/albums? Well alright, I had checked some samples off their so called classic albums but at the time they sounded too rockn'roll-ish for my liking...
