View Full Version : Softer songs by Metal bands

ive been putting together a nice playlist on my ipod for just chilling out, and basically im asking for sudgestions along the lines of
running blind - godsmack
voices (acoustic) - godsmack
chasing blue sky - queensryche
nothing else matter - metallica
hotel california ft Eric Clapton - eagles
covered in rain - john mayer
etc
so if anyone has any sudgestions that would kind of fit into this "category" (kind of prog???) or "mood" it'd be appreciated.
my favorite of these is running blind by godsmack, so any more sudgestions of chilled out godsmack, it would be especially appreciated
basically, softer songs by good metal/prog bands that would fit in a playlist like the ones i put above....any sudgestions?
I don't think you meant it to sound like that, but you know that The Eagles and John Mayer aren't metal, right?
Toaster
11-20-2006, 11:19 PM
Well, they sort of are. If extreme death/grind counts as metal.
Wrong thread?
You want the any other death heads?, that is on floor 4, with Ladieswear and Perfume.

No, bad joke. :(
Seriously, From Eden Estranged by Augury is a chilled song that I really like. You'll get a lot of Opeth recommendations - they released an entire album of soft songs.

I don't think you meant it to sound like that, but you know that The Eagles and John Mayer aren't metal, right?
no i didnt mean it to sound like that, i just thoiught they went nice with my playlist so they are on there lol
but ya, as i said, im lookin for a few chill out songs that are well done...and usaully this best accomplished by metal/prog bands so that it doesnt turn into a ballad emo fest... :)

Anything out of Damnation (soft album Toaster was talking about) by Opeth.
rockbrigade
11-20-2006, 11:40 PM
i just skimmed a bit of a listen to that opeth album damnation and its close...but maybe just a little slighty "darker" mood then what i had in mind...
Metallica - Fade To Black, and, Metallica - Sanitarium?
Sleeper

Fear Factory - Bite The Hand That Bleeds
Harvest by Opeth :D
It's pretty happy, at least i think so, very chilled out at least.

Guns N' Roses - Patience, Knocking On Heavens Door, Don't Cry & November Rain
Nevermore' - The Heart Collector & Sentient 6

11-20-2006, 11:51 PM
Don't know if these are exactly what you're looking for, but...
My Dying Bride - Sear Me MCMXCIII
Novembers Doom - Autumn Reflection
Opeth - The Drapery Falls
And as G_Mac07 said, Nevermore - The Heart Collector and Sentient 6.
rockbrigade
11-20-2006, 11:57 PM
ya that opeth song harvest is more like it :)
and also someone sudgested pantera planet caravan...i like that as well
There's more Opeth similar to Harvest, the whole Blackwater Park is an amazing listen, although it does get pretty damn heavy at some stages, it's just one of those albums you can have playing in the backround, concintrating on other things, but still listen to it.
Megadeth - A Tout Le Monde
rockbrigade
11-21-2006, 12:05 AM
i do have a tout le monde, ..thanks for reminding me to put it on my list lol
Megadeth - Forclosure of a Dream? I don't actually like it that much, but meh, it might fit the requirements?
You might enjoy Metallica's Orion, and The Call of The Ktulu, although not really what you're looking for, they're instrumentals, get a bit heavy in some parts, but they're very chilled.

hotel california ft Eric Clapton - eagles
wait what.
good job limewire you tricked another idiot!
Just listen to Rodrigo y Gabriela. Awesome stuff, not Metal..but they are really damn good :)
That was kinda uncalled for.

While you're on the subject of Opeth, "Face of Melinda" is another great example.
Green Carnation would be another great band - "The Burden is Mine" is a fantastic track in the vein of what you're describing, as is "Sweet Leaf" and "Alone."
Katatonia - Omerta possibly, although the subject matter is rather dark. "Deliberation" and "My Twin" aren't really ballady, but they might work.
"Intrinsic" by After Forever is great.

Faerum Aeternum by Ensiferum is pretty soft, and folky throughout the entire thing, it actually has no metal in it when I think about it.

I second Opeth's tunes. The Drapery Falls is a good one to listen to. If Damnation is not mellow enough to chill out to, then what kind of slow metal songs we talkin'? Because when I read in this earlier you said that you liked the Eagles? That isnt metal if you ask me. If your not really in a metal setting you should check out Porcupine Tree Waiting Phase 1 or something like that.
Since you had Chasing Blue Sky by Queensr˙che on the list, you might want to check out The Lady Wore Black and Roads to Madness by them.

Try maybe these if there your cup of tea:
Dream Theater - Images and Words (the song).
Judas Priest - Try maybe either Dreamer Deciever or Deciever, one is soft.
Alice in Chains - Rooster, (I'm sure there are others).
Nightwish - Ever Dream, Ocean Soul, Feel For You, (If you can appreciate the various orchestrated parts and the quality of Tarja's voice).
Peter Frampton - Do You Feel Like We Do
Led Zeppelin - Rain Song, Stairway to Heaven, (just check out Led Zeppelin III, theres around six acoustic songs on there, great album.)
I could go on forever, hope this helped, tried to add some variety.

Yeah, add anything off Jar of Flies & Sap, plus Down in a Hole & Would? from Dirt and Frogs from the s/t (although virtually all AIC soft material is depressing, so don't come here for happy stuff)
Tool - Disposition/Reflection off Lateralus, Third Eye off Aenima (although it gets quite heavy at points).
In Flames - Evil in a Closet
At the Gates - Into the Dead Sky (instrumental)
I second Into Eternity and Opeth :thumb:
Iron Maiden - Journeyman (acoustic ballad!!)
Shadows Fall - Lead Me Home (just awesome!)
Dream Theater - The Spirit Carries On (also awesome)

Ah another Dream Theater fan, The Spirit Carries On is from a phenominal album, just wow! Before this album Scenes From A Memory I couldn't stand Dream Theater.
Someone mentioned In Flames am I the only one that just loves Satelites and Astronautes?
I love the commercial for the album of 80's metal ballads, and the guy is like "every metalhead has his soft side!"

Agreed - Augury is pure awesomeness.
Get Kamelot - Regalis Apertura. It is soft, but I don't know if it's in the vein of what you're looking for. Either way, it's probably my favourite album intro ever.

dude opeth have like tons of soft parts man listen to damnation dude seriously
If your really into Godsmack then Alice In Chains is the only way to go. Not only did Godsmack take their name from an AIC song, but their sound is completely ripped off from them.

Well if he was reaching for the best chill TOOL song, he obviously meant to say "Parabol" or "Eon Blue Apocalypse". Then followed by "Triad" then track 69 on the album "Undertow" followed by the rest of the segues like blame hoffman and all the other segues on 10,000 days. Mynards dick is chill and funnie, and it's acoustic.
