At the Palace Hall in Bucharest, Romania on December 9th, THERION [will] play with [a] full symphonic orchestra, choir and international opera stars. The band will go on stage with nearly 70 musicians of the Academic Radio Choir, 100 instrumentists of the Romanian Radio Orchestra and guest classical singers from Vienna, awarded as best opera voices worldwide. Markus Stollenwerk, who joined the famous German band RAGE for their 'Lingua Mortis' album will be the conductor of this world-premiere event. The repertoire [will] include famous classical pieces [performed] in THERION [style], as well as THERION songs with symphonic orchestra, some of them never played live before. The project is done with kind support of the Swedish Embassy in Romania.

"[The] 'Therion Goes Classic' concert is part of a project called 'Ars musicae, ars medicinae – music against cancer' developed by Aquarius Foundation [of] Romania; all thanks for the initiative go to THERION. Funds raised [by] the concert [will benefit] the treatment of children with cancer in Romania in 2007."

For more information, visit www.megatherion.com

Updated info:

The show will consist of 3 parts:

1. Pure orchestral versions of Therion songs. For example an opera version of Clavicula Nox.

2. Therion + orchestra and choir perform various famous works by Wagner, Mozart, Saens-Saen, Dvorak and Verdi.

3. Therion play own songs together with orchestra and choir. Of course classics that everyone would expect will be played, but also songs that have never been played before, such as Via Nocturna, Eternal Return etc. Also a version of Siren of the Woods scored for real orchestra and with opera singers.

The tickets are available in 3 price classes. The tickets for Class III are now sold out. There are however very attractive tickets left in class I and II.

Tickets available internationally at The Therion Store.

Fans living in Romania can get it at ticket retailers or over Aquarius Foundation's web page.

It's finally happening, guys...for fans of the band, this is huge news. Therion are a band that would sound amazing within this context. To play with 100% live musicians... Unfortunately, it's in Budapest, so most of us will just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope that they record the show and put it on DVD, but either way it's great that they're doing it!

I'd be pleased with a cd already.

I saw them live with just a few extra vocalists and it was already amazing, so a full orchestra...

Yeah, a DVD or a live CD would be sweet.

I wonder what other songs will get the full classical treatment? Clavicula Nox is a good choice.

Yeah, definitetly. I could see Rise of Sodom and Gammorah being alot of fun.

On related news, the new album is pretty sweet. Comes out in January, but it's already been leaked. I'm loving Petter Karlsson's drumming...he joined the band shortly after they recorded the Sirius B/Lemuria albums, so this'll be his first studio contributions for Therion.

As a whole, the album is refreshingly different from the band's last couple albums. It's a fair bit...weirder, and I suppose in that regard it's more experimental. It also feels a little bit rawer production wise. The emphasis is alot more on the bandmembers themselves, and there are some really impressive solo/jam sections (Kristen Niemann is ridiculously underrated as far as lead guitarists go!). The album almost has a kind of classic rock/psychadelia feel throughout it, as well as a bit more traditional heavy metal. There are still opera vocals, but the lead female vocalist (and Mats again as male vocalist) also sing naturally, resulting in a fairly diverse sound. Overall, pretty interesting album.

Well, they were one of the forerunners in the Symphonic metal scene. Their trademark was the use of full choirs for primary vocal lines.

The Wondrous World of Punt (gets extra stars for having the best name ever)
An Arrow From the Sun
The Invincible
Vanaheim
Asgard (well, let's face it...the whole damn 'Secret of the Runes' album)

As is Midgard. :) Birth of Venus Illigitima (off of Vovin) is pretty awesome too. "Rise of Sodom and Gammorah" is pretty much textbook "epic," but it's more epic in a heavy, forboding kind of way, as opposed to a Nemo kind of way.

Oh man. THIS SOUNDS SO EFFING COOL.

Considering that Therion (and by extension all of their classical influences) influence the prog-metal compositions I write a LOT, and that it's my dream to have those compositions performed live someday with the appropriate levels of live instrumentation, hats off to Therion for making it happen.

They had better release a DVD of this.

PS: Sup MX back from sabbatical ;)

They're Symphonic Metal with an obscene amount of vocalists.

Shattered_Future

The really early stuff was death metal though.

Has anybody picked up Celebrators Of Becoming? Aside from there being an absolutely obscene amount of footage, they show some extremely early bootleg stuff. It's quite interesting watching the band evolve.

I read it had the highest budget, by far, of any Nuclear Blast release ev4r.

Everything about Therion is so huge (esp the females), and I think that's why I find them so bloody hilarious.

Shattered_Future
11-21-2006, 10:12 PM
Speaking of huge females in Therion, one singer had another open a soda can between her boobs with the other's teeth. Quite entertaining.

I like what they do though.

Riva

Basically, their first two albums were death metal, but Beyond Sanctorum features more progressive elements, like strings, etc, and is more melodic than Of Darkness...

After that, you have Lepaca Kliffoth, and then they delved fully into the symphonic power metal side: From Theli to Deggial to Vovin to Secret Of The Runes.

Their latest two, Lemuria and Sirius B are more power metal, with less symphonic elements. But they still have plenty of operatic vocalists, etc, and are great albums.

I'm happy to upload an album or two for you, if you want. My favourite albums are Secret Of The Runes and Sirius B.

But yeah, they only have like 8 vocalists, not -that- many.

Det_Nosnip
11-21-2006, 10:27 PM
Well, the last two albums were recorded with full choirs I believe. Typically on tour they carry about 5 opera singers and Mats Levin. Chris used to growl and stuff, but apparently has ceased doing that.

Riva
11-21-2006, 10:35 PM
I mean, as in distinct voices. Otherwise any band that has done a symphony could be accused of having that many.

I think he still did that on the Lemuria/Serius B tour. They had 2 male and 2 female background choir and one female lead vocals with them too.

Det_Nosnip
11-22-2006, 02:52 PM
Yeah, they did a few old songs when I saw them, plus some of the newer songs like Typhon which had growls in them. Chris sent out a message a few months ago saying he doesn't want to sing/growl anymore, though.

Iron Bars
11-22-2006, 04:41 PM
Too bad, he's not to shaby at growling and that means no more Typhon in the live show (I don't see Mats doing that, though his King Diamond imitation is great).

It's bound to be better than the Trans Siberian Orchestra, at least. *shudders*

Their Beethoven and Christmas stuff was ok, but I almost retched when they played "O, Fortuna." "Butchered it" would be a nice way of describing their orchestrations...your sodomy discussions were probably closer to the mark.

Typhon on the live DVD was kinda weird, to be honest. Chris's growls were fine, but Mats did this like rough singing thing. It sounded really weird together.

He does a killer Lemmy though.
