Alright peeps. I've recently moved my kit into a room and it sounds like **** now, due to the last tuning taking place in different acoustics and shizz. It sounds tinny.

Today I played a Gretsch kit and I LOVED how it sounded. I play this kit at least twice a week, but for some reason... I dunno, maybe I picked up a new ear or something, but it sounded absolutely amazing. The only way I can describe it is using the word 'tight'. The bass was very punchy, not boomy, but not dead. Just perfect. Very sexy for using in single bass patterns. The toms (coated G2's over stock, I believe) sounded great, and the snare was a power centre reverse. The tom sizes on it, using a 4 piece set up, were 14 snare, 12 rack and 16 floor, I think. It just sounded great. You play a VERY simple beat on it and it just sounds great.

I hate the way my kit is sounding atm, and I definitely want to change alot. Firstly I'm going to change from my current clear emp's to coated, and probably brand change to Evans. However, I want my kit to sound like the Gretsch. I play a Sonor 3005 with 14x5.5 snare, 10x9, 12x10 and 16x16 toms. I want my kit to sound TIGHT. Where you play simple stuff but it really cuts through. It's hard to describe. Perhaps I'm still on an orgasmic high from the Gretsch, but yeah. What heads would suit my kit and sizes? Would G2's, like the Gretsch, be good? Or should they be different for my kit.
I believe the Gretsch 12" may have been shallower which would've helped the sound.

Oh, I also have a 22x18.5 bass.

However, I want my kit to sound like the Gretsch.

Get rid of your kit and buy the Gretsch then.

Well I could help if you told me what Gretsch it is or you tell me what the wood is. Get exactly same heads as the Gretsch and see how tight or loose the heads are on it, do the same.

But it could be to do with the acoustics in the place where the Gretsch is.

I believe it's a Catalina Birch.

Well your kit is maple so itll sound different no matter what but you can get close. Like I say get the exact same heads and also, if you like the bass sound see whats in it or what batter it has. Also check for the beater and if theres a patch or anything like that.

Ah. True.

It has stock heads for both batter and reso on the bass, but the batter has a pre-muffled ring.

Hmm, I think Gretsch used to use Remo headsd as their stock heads but its probably all changed now.

Yeah. Birch.

Your kit is maple. Love your rounded, boomy-yet-full-bodied maple kit, or buy a birch kit.

Drying out your sound with thicker heads means you will tighten your sound up, but lose the cut you want. Attack/Cut is the kingdom of Birch.

Your best option, is if you're using single plies now, loosen the reso's off and see if that does enough to get closer to the sound you want. If you can't find a happy medium with the reso's...go to G2's...then if you're still displeased. Buy a birch kit.
