i did a quick search on this the other night at work... didn't find anything here on the forums..

out of curiousity, Why have a rounded fingerboard for a standard bass? or a rounded bridge? I understand for bowing insturments.. but i've played some basses (ie - acoustic.... fender? i think. i forget) that have a rounded bridge and the top and bottom strings are lower than the middle strings.... i personally find it annoying.

Is there any real reasoning for it?

I'm not sure, I think it MIGHT make it more comfortable to fret.

ie: this: )
or this: /
or this: |

which would you prefer? go 'play' a flat piece of wood, see if its different

i prefer playing necks like the ones on fenders and stingrays becuase they have the curved fingerboard. i can still play basses like warwick bolt ons fine but i find it less comfortable.

The top and bottom strings should be lower on an electric too, if it has a rounded fretboard.

The strings are supposed to follow the radius.

The reason? I dont really know. My guess would be that it's more comfortable, and it helps you distinguish between each string without looking more easily (more noticable the more strings you have, obviously).

EADG, this is off-topic, but do you have a tab for your version of Mad World?

I know the strings are supposed to follow the radius... but i dont like the radius, haha. Why have a radius? is my question. i dont see a point to it on an electric or just non-bowing insturment.

can anyone remember some basses that may have been on here a while back, and the neck actually twisted (and the fingerboard with it) in a way that was supposedly themost comfortable for playing
if anyone remembers the name of things or the website itd be appreciated:thumb:

I guess there is no point. Just play Warwicks and you'll be happy.

i do love me some warwicks :thumb:

but why do it, if there is no point? I would imagine it only makes for more work by having to measure a radius and everything, rather than a straight flat cut.

can anyone explain?

I already said, it's more comfortable for some people and it makes it easier to distinguish between strings.

I think we may want to get a guitar player's input on this too. But I build my basses with a 16" radius fingerboard. That's pretty flat. I don't know why some basses have such rounded fingerboards like 10" or 12" unless it's because someone decided it should be more rounded because upright bass is rounded.

But it may just be more comfortable. It also may have something to do with bending strings. On my oud the fingerboard is very flat (non string bending instrument), on my sitar the radius is like 3 inches (very string bending instrument).

My fretless has a flat board, I made it that way just to try out and I like it. When I get around to doing the fretboard of the bass that I am building it will be flat. I don't really actually notice any difference.

Agreed.

He just has to have a huge collection of Conklin, Accugrove, and Boss, three of my favourite companies.
