ive been listening to a lot of godspeed you! black emperor and their side project a silver mount zion on and off lately and have got an itch for more stuff like them. ive checked out other post rock bands like explosins in the sky and mogwai, and neither of them can hold a candle to godspeed or silver mount zion. what would you guys suggest in the way of other bands that are post-rock/minimalist like godspeed?
Matt?

Sigur Ros (Agætis Byrjun is their best)
Jaga Jazzist (What We Must is absolutely incredible)
Mono
65daysofstatic
Do Make Say Think (& Yet & Yet)
Tortoise
DMST and Tortoise are not like the others in that they don't build up to cruscendos of epic proportions, but rather are real awesome to chill to.

I don't really like Mono, or Yndi Halda... or any of those bands that are just too sweet. Give me some real post rock like Slint... Tortoise isn't really post rock (at least TNT isn't), but listen to them anyway. They are probably the best band mentioned so far.

Mogwai > all. But I'm pretty biased because I love Mogwai violently.

same with me with godspeed. for some reason no other post rock bands will ever be at godspeed's level in my eyes.

I tried to get into Godspeed for about 5 minutes once. But after not hearing any music within that 5 minutes, I decided to give up.

Meh, I might be the only post-rock listener who isn't a fan of Mogwai. And I have no idea why.

Sigur Ros is good.
I'm going to Bloomington for school next year!
And Sigur Ros IS good.
Explosions is good. Godspeed is bad.
This.
As far as the ones I know go, Mogwai > Explosions > Sigur Ros > Bark Psychosis > Jaga Jazzist > Talk Talk > The Coma Lilies > Do Make Say Think > Godspeed
The last two bore the **** out of me.
Explosions are gateway drivel if you ask me. Their songs are achingly samey and their instrumentation never has any variety so it gets boring and the atmosphere isn't near as strong as basically any of the other ones you listed.

I basically agree with you, except that I've never heard Mogwai and Sigur Ros is basically my favorite band regardless of genre.
At least Explosions understand what a melody is.
Sigur Ros would be my #1 if they were more consistent, but a lot of thier stuff just seems to meander too much. At their best though, they're unbeatable within the genre.

Yeah, I'm a fan of both Godspeed and A silver Mount Zion, but I have to admit i do alot of fast forwarding while listening to them.
What about Fly Pan Am, I haven't really heard anything but it seems like it could be up your alley.

I don't think anyone is giving Do Make Say Think enough credit just because they play a different style of post-rock, one that doesn't build up to massive cruscendos. Don't let that put you off people, it's way better to chill and mellow out to.

Word to that. Although they do have more crescendos in their most recent album.
I sure would appreciate it if someone could upload me some Infidel Castro, I absolutely can't find it anywhere.
