Is the Tama Stagestar any good? Is it good value for money? £279
What are good/bad points about this kit?
Can you suggest something which may be slightly better but of a similar value?

Many thanks :chug:

if your a beginner yes.

as you prob know there different size drums to most kits.

what kinda of music do you play? it mgiht be best to go for a regular size kit.
is it your first kit etc?

Thanks guys. I'm not a beginner and yes I do have a yammy SCN (excellent memory :thumb: - I've not posted on here for ages!)

It is actually a friend of a friend who has asked me and I dont really know what the Tama is like.

I'm not sure what type of music he plays but he is a beginner. He is 14.

Tell him to get a SC then. Cheap tamas arent worth it IMO.

I have the Tama Stagestar and I think it's excellent. The cymbals are crap on it, but the drums are quality for the price.

well i own a stagestar, and the only gripe i have with it is the puny 18" bass drum and the puny 14" floor tom. throw in some nice heads (g2 clears over g1 clears for me) and it actually sounds good.

for the money, the kit is actually quite good. the snare's not spectacular, but it does sound decent with new heads.

:) i hope this helps

LOL! I did but I think it's slightly over his budget. Maybe a Yammy Rydeen?

Thanks, is helpful. I wondered about the tom sizes. Will pass that on. :thumb:

When I ordered my Pro-M, I ordered them same exact tom sizes. I guess its a matter of what you play. It's perfect, IMO, for a jazz player.

The Stagestar has fusion toms (10", 12", 14") and an 18" bass drum, that sounds like a good combo to me. You could easily make that bass drum sound good. Put something small in it and put a 2-ply batter on it, mess around with the reso to find something you like but keep it loose to make it have a lower pitch.

I like the Stagestar, a lot. I might buy one to transport around and that, its also nearly as good as my current kit. I say nearly as good because my kit sounds great now!

yeah i guess its subjective. for me, i didn't mind the 10" and 12" rack tom, but I felt that the 14" and 18" was too small for rock and top40s :)

it's a great bop or jazz kit. I just sold mine.

When buying one also order:
-New Cymbals (omg those are horrid!)
-New Heads (the tamas are meeeehhhhh)
-New hi-hat clutch (the default always falls apart)
-Possibly new throne (the one it comes with is a lil' shafty)

all in all, great drums. Highly recommend!

Still, Tama Cymbals > Pearl Cymbals. =P

The stock Pearl ride is very good for crashing, a great metal crash IMO. They use one at my school on the practice kits and I love crashing on it, apart from that it sucks lol
