What album should I start with if I want to check out some of his stuff?

Depends which direction you want to go.

His earlier more ambient material --> Selected Ambient Works 85-92

His later more jungle-influenced material --> Richard D. James Album

Taking into account your musical background I'd probably say go for Richard D. James Album

But seriously try Come to Daddy EP, it's brilliant.

I'd say Selected Ambient Works, because I could never see the appeal in the noisy cubist crap.

BEEP SQUIDDLE *percussion that sounds like a box of cuttlery thrown down a flight of stairs* BONK INSESSANT SCREECHING. Genius.

Get I Care Because You Do, it's his best, followed by Ambient 85 - 92.

I Care Because You Do is by far and away the best place to start (and it's also his best album.) It showcases both his ambient work and craziness.

Which one? The first is much better in my opinion.

Download the single song "Next Heap With". It's off I Care Because You Do. The last song, the ambient closer. That whole album is good... I guess just read up, every album is different.

I still think that Richard D. James Album is his best. But so far I've found that you can't really go wrong with any of his material.

If you like some of his more...interesting stuff you should also check out Squarepusher. Try Ultravisitor if you're interested.

Drukqs is a good album IMO, It has a lot of crazier stuff, but there's also a few of his more ambient tracks. I'd recommend it, if you don't find anything pleasing on it at all, I might stay away from Aphex Twin.

I can hardly stand the second disc of Druqks tbh. Usually I'm not offended by filler material, but in this case I am simply because his music isn't all that dense and engulfing, so it seems like the filler isn't so much a reprieve so much as "well I found this on my mixer's hard drive and there was extra space on the album, so It can go on the album."

Urgh.

It was also rumoured that he had left almost all the album's tracks on an MP3 player that he accidentally left on a plane, and rushed its release to pre-empt an Internet leak
Perhaps that is why.

He had a track of (what I assume is..) his family singing happy birthday to him on his mp3 player?

:p Whatev.

Perhaps he is a very lonely man.
